Thinking about buying a new toy, does anyone have one or road a Segway?

There was a lot of stir initially but it looks like things have died down a bit. Would be kind of cool to take one for a spin.

After Monster Garage last night they did a little clip on a couple who had customized theirs. One had large solid Harley looking wheels and fenders on it. The other had some custom wheels on it. Expensive toys, but I admit I'd like to give one a try...

I think the bloated price has alot to do with it.

Scooters are all over the place at $100-$300 but, the Segway is miles from there.

I think too, once you play with it a few times, what purpose would it really serve?

There was a recall a couple of months ago on these....when the battery would run down..the sofeware could fail and you end up on the bottom so to speak..

One of the katt owner at the cannon beach run brought two of them and we all tried them out. Bunches of fun and easy to drive, my 13 yo figured it out faster than some of us old timers. There are some pics in the events section under the cannon beach run this year. They actually fit two of them in the prowler trailer with all there other travel stuff.

How about the scooters?

I'm considering one for my 11 year old son for christmas.

They are relatively inexpensive (approx. $200), seem easy to ride, but do they hold up? Are they safe?

Anyone had any experience with them?

I hope my 12 year old doesn't find out about them or else it'll be another item on the Christmas list

I've rode on the segways in Miami and they are cool. Sonesta Beach Resort on Key Biscayne rents them. I would rent them first to see if you really like it. They are really cool and innovative. The larger model costs $4800 from segway.com. Brookstone in the Palm Beach Gardens mall is selling them, the larger model for $4400.

The segways are cool, but for $300-500 you can buy a nice electric scooter and save thousands of dollars. You could buy your whole family electric scooters for 1/2 the price of one segway.

$299

In my opinion it is a great idea, but they missed the mark on price.

Just my 2 cents

PS- One last thing. If you want to stop someplace with your segway, there is no way to lock it up like you can do with a scooter.

They are selling these scooters around here like Hot Cakes for $199. I think every kid in town has one now. A guy sells them out of a trailer, he just sets up anywhere he can and sells about 8 to 10 a day. You have to be on the look out for kids riding them. They don't know how dangerous these things are on the road, with old f@#$ like me driving around.

they have not caught on around here at all, yet. I have only seen one or two of them. I didn't realize they were that cheap.

On my trip to F1 race in Indy,I picked up 2 of them(1 electric and 1 gas). They are not being shipped to Canada because of some safety standards-who knows!
My son and I have been booting around back country roads for a while now-they are a blast!

I was looking at those little bitty wheels and was thinking the same thing about me. They might hold me up for about a half block or so. All the kids riding them around here sure know where the horn is on those things. You can hear a group of them coming before you see them, but they seem to be having a good time.
If they would drop the price on the Segway I might look into getting one. Where I work is only about 2 miles from home.

The gas scooter are to loud and noise and the electric ones don't bother any one. Now I can see why they are catching on.

I saw those scooters at a sporting goods store in Colorado last month. The guys at the store said they were cheap crap. Said they rarely arrived without something already broken. They were not impressed.
