Google has implemented a new feature wherein you can type someone's telephone number into the search bar and hit enter and then you will be given a map to their house. Before forwarding this, I tested it by typing a listed telephone number in google.com. The phone number came up, and when I
clicked on the MapQuest link, it actually mapped out where I live. Quite scary. Please look up your own number. Read below for details. Think about it--if a child, single person, ANYONE gives out his/her phone number,
someone can actually now look it up to find out where he/she lives. The safety issues are obvious, and alarming. This is not a hoax; Mapquest will put a star on your house on your street. In order to test whether your phone >number is mapped, go to: www.google.com. Type your phone number in the search bar with dashes (i.e. 555-555-1212)and hit enter. This will divulge your name and address. You will see a link option to the right for Mapquest (click on it), which will use the address to provide a map to your home or place of business.
If you want to BLOCK Google from divulging your private information, simply click on the telephone icon next to your phone number and follow their directions to block your number, which will take 48 hours. If you are unlisted in the phone book, you might not be in there, but it is a good idea to check.
You might want to forward this on to friends and family

I want to add that it only works if you have been active on the internet. My mom has lived at the same address and had the same number for 35 years. I put in her number and got back "no records found" She has never owned a computer in her life. If your number is out there, it's probably your own fault.

Not true about the active internet part. I put in #'s from my relatives and friends that NEVER had access to a computer and their numbers came up.

They can still use a reverse phone book lookup to get the address and then map it. I use this every once in a while to get directions to someone's house before I leave if I don't know how to get there. It is a lot easier to remember a phone number instead of an address.

It's all publicly available information, so there's really no need for such alarm. The telephone book and dozens of other online search engines will return your address from a telephone number or vice versa and then all you have to do is enter it into Mapquest to get a map to your house. Google just saves a step.

I just typed in my old phone number which has been disconnected at least 4 months and it listed my name and address.

I looked up the number of a dead beat that is to send me tail lights for my Dart

The name on email is not what came up.

sometimes this is a good thing.

as far as looking up someone. The public library has phone books that list everyone, even those that are unlisted. Sometimes you just have to know where to look.

As an investigator for the government, there are many ways to find out things about people. I have used several commercial tools to track people down. Others are right, with the internet anyone is just a few clicks away. Just my two cents.

reverse directoy look-ups (where you start with the phone number) have been around long before the internet... I used to use this to confirm addresses when making deliveries... almost 20 years ago.

If your phone number and address is in a phone book, then it is also on the internet. There may be a few exceptions, but largely, this is true.

Hi

It appears to me if you have your number automatically blocked it may not return a result here. My home number is blocked and it doesn't return a result here. My brothers is not blocked and comes up. Interesting and just another reason to have your number blocked by the phone company.

If you are going to unlist it, you should change it first. Once your number is on the internet, it is likely to stay for a long, long, long time....

I'm not sure that is entirely correct.

The number for me shows the previous owner of that number and their address. I am on several pc's daily.

Like Tami, my mom has never touched a keyboard and her number and address are their.

I wonder where they get their info from?
