New??? I'd buy a Honda S2000,,,and then supercharge it to over 300hp. Shifting at 9,000rpms is awesome. Mustang SVT would be my second choice.

If you want to join the front wheel drive generation, maybe WRX or a Evolution. JMO

You did not mention what you prefer. There are some bad to the bone 60's muscle cars still available in your price range. Some big block Mopars (usually less than $20K accept Hemi or Rag Tops, Big Block Chevelles-less than $25K, Big Block Mid-Year Corvettes- 427 Tri-Power- $30-45K.
What are you looking for?? Early or New??

Bill,

I'd agree with A/C ... for new vehicles. The Volvo S60R and Audi S4 would also be a quick ride in the WRX and Evolution class but I don’t think we can put that much foreign content into a thread without it being pulled – J/K:

Don't Vipers drop down into that range? Not sure how old and miles don't really seem to matter much as they all seem to be low. But they have basically the same power train across models right?

The propping up of sales through incentives for the big three has eroded resale value. It would seem to be a buyers market for used...

I’d do the Mustang Cobra SVT if I was doing it, but I would be waiting until the new body style was in place… hypothetically speaking of course!

Bill, we have the Honda S2000. Yes, for the money it is a real nice sports car. We have others and the honda is awesome. Well for starters it puts out 2hp per cu. inch so therefore the 4cyl puts out 240 hp. and its up to you how much more you want. Putting a super charger on it now you are close to 350 plus. It has a VTec motor and that kicks in at 6000 rpm, it redlines at 9000rpm and what a rush, go drive it you will be amazed.

This is what ours looks like.

Here are more pics.

If you want real cheap (and don't mind the look), the Neon SRT-4 with the Stage 2 kit from Mopar will blow the doors off any competitor. 0 to 60 in 5 seconds and less than $20,000 US

My heart is set on the new Lotus Elise, but I'm not sure if it's under $45000.
Perhaps an older Lotus esprit-very exotic looking!

2-year old Corvette can't be beat.

But I also second Wayne's suggestion on the SRT-4. Sure it's a Neon underneath, but you could have one seriously fast NEW car WITH a warranty and still have enough change from a $45k bill for a high mileage Prowler!

I'm sorry but i just can't see myself driving around in a NEON!!I don't give a crap how fast it is! I'm 49 yrs old not 20!!Bill i don't know how old you are so it may be the car for you!! How big are you, i won't fit in a Honda either!$45000 isn't alot of money to some people but i'll take it as a deposit on a 04 viper. JMO

The Cobra is from the Special Vehicle Team, close to 400RWHP from what they advertise.

If you find one and they will take Xplan on it let me know. I might be able to save you some money. I have not checked but I do not think it qualifies for xplan but I know a guy that got a 03 Cobra on A plan, so maybe it is the dealer that has the say if they will sell it at Discount.

I think the Cobra is less than $40,000 list

Wayne---I can't see you in a Neon either. Maybe you should get one for your son, he'll be driving soon?

I drove my buddy's new 6 speed Nissan 350Z over the weekend. He calls it the Rocket, I can see why!

My friend has a S2000 4-sale. They are selling it pretty cheap. I drove it before buying the prowler. I was very impressed with it, but it's not a prowler.
