While driving my kat to Westech Automotive last Sunday on I 94 through Chicago I noticed an SSR in my rearview mirror as we approached a toll booth. I got in the right lane and as he pulled up next to me, the driver wouldn't even look over - what a snob. The Red truck had Michigan plates and continued North towards Milwaukee. One thing I noted was how much larger the SSR is than our Prowlers. ------------------ |

Marty, he was obviously embarrassed to be driving a mere Chevrolet next to such a cool vehicle! It's the same thing we driving marked Police Cruisers notice. The other driver thinks if he doesn't look at us, then we can't see him! The old avoid eye contact trick! ------------------ |

Bob - no way would he have risked being stomped by a kat. I hope I see him again on the way home with the nitrous kit installed! Chris- I was wondering when you tinted your Prowler windows? :D His weren't tinted unless he put it on backwards because I could see him. ------------------ |

Just read the Automobile Mag article on the SSR - what a tank! Their stats indicate it weighs in at 4760 pounds = thats about 2000 pounds more than our Prowlers. They are based on a modified Trailblazer/Envoy frame which is part of the reason for the heft, I guess. With a small anemic V8, they are about as fast as a Honda Accord (according to the article). |

It will be interesting to see if the Car Mags rip the SSR for its shortcomings as much as they did the Prowler for not having a V8. My guess is that they won't, because it does have a V8 even if it does turn out to be a dog. I've seen them praise ricer cars for similar or same performance as the Prowler,as haveing blistering accleration, while they said the Prowler was disappointing. On another note. I just read a 1996 Motor Trend article about test driving the pre production Prowler stating it has a limo like ride. Interesting. |

Just like the Prowler, slap a supercharger on it and watch it go. Marty, what color was it? I still think they are coooooooooool. |

Andy - it was red - real red - the color looked good. Also, he had the top up and driving past if you didn't know, you couldn't tell it was rettactable. IF Prowleres had not been manufactured, I would consider getting an SSR. Of course I would leave it totally stock! :D ------------------ |

Marty: Ken and I were driving into downtown Dallas a couple of weeks ago and a yellow one was just ahead of us. I had really anticipated being knocked out by it, but I wasn't. Would still like to see one up close - haven't yet. Didn't get a good look at it, but did like the color. We were thinking of possibly getting it for Ken for his next truck, but will wait to see what happens with them. He is also very interested in the Hemi Dodge. Tami |

Up close... the SSR is large as a TANK! The photos you see do not accurately represent the physical size / weight of the vehicle... they are not even close. Rather have a V8? Not when it is installed in a 4700 lb. TANK... my V6 (sounds like a V8) installed in a 2800 lb. work of art is just my style. Jay |

Marty, I saw a red one in Lexington last weekend, wonder if it was the same one? I didn't get close enough to him to see the license plate, he was ahead of me in traffic. First one I have seen on the road. Mike |

Chevy had an SSR at the San Diego County Fair (aka Del Mar Fair) last month. It was the best looking truck Chevy had on display… They told me it would be in the show rooms in August and the MSRP would be around $43k. I am sure a dealer markup will be added for the got to have it first customers. You have to give Chevy some credit for producing a vehicle that is different and has some flair. I hope all manufactures produce more unique vehicles. - Kcat |
