Bravo Italy! Ferrarri and Pavarotti to name just two. Lest I leave out Sophia Loren. Job well done! Let the games begin.

Unfortunately the Olympics, Winter & Summer, don't do much for me anymore. There is a local young man, Joey Cheek, I'll try and follow him, but not much else catches my fancy and I'm a sports freak. Cheek is a speed skater. Yes an ice speed skater from NC. He started out on inlines at a roller rinks where my son started inline hockey.

I guess it's the 24/7 broadcast of all sports today. For instance - This year ALL ACC basketball games are televised on some channel in some market.

I used to watch all the Olympics, but now with all the choices we have, other things are more interesting to me. This is unfortunate because these young athletes train so hard for so long for this once in a lifetime opportunity.

Kimmee Meisner is from our neighborhood high school. Figure skating I think. Only 17 years old. Go Kimmee!

The Olympics this year are bitter sweet for us.

A good friend that lived across the street from us at our last home has been the guy in the trailer coordinating all the various shots, graphics, and sound for the Olympics.

Steve Laxston was only 50 years old and had already won 23 Emmy's for a variety of things he had done (alot with the Olympics). He had been a part of or in charge behind the scenes for the last 20 years.

This guy was a very unassuming character, great chef, had a ponytail and almost childlike quality about him. You'd never know he had so many awards till you saw them littered about their home. He was also a grand musician who had about 50 antique electric guitars and a sound studio at home.

At a church Christmas event this last Christmas we learned that he was having trouble keeping food down and went to the hospital on a Friday. They thought he'd be out by Monday but, they ended up keeping him in and he had a massive heart attack on Tuesday compounded by complete liver and kidney failure. He was on life support till Thursday when they pronounced him brain dead. We were all devisted that this could happen to a guy so young, so fit, and who drank and ate right.

He was such a well know person at NBC that Mr. Tartarkoff (sp) flew down and stayed at the family home for a week, if nothing else just to answer the phone for the new widow.

NBC then flew Nancy, her kids, and both sets of grandparents to the Olympics for the openning ceremony and a special tribute to Steve. Total class act, if you ask me.

God Speed Steve..............

Thanks Sirreal.

Yeah, it was good to see Cheek win. Even better to see him donate his winnings to charity.

His best event is to come Saturday.

YF, I am sorry for the loss of your friend. I did read your link and it sounds like he was a pretty cool guy. It's great that his efforts and contributions have been recognized and celebrated. Too often those behind the scenes don't receive their dues. I have always enjoyed the Olympic presentations and now I know of one that has had a hand in making it possible.

Randy, I thought that very noble of Cheek to donate his winnings to charity! He is someone for Greensboro to be proud of for sure!

I have always enjoyed the Olympics for a lot of reasons. But it begins with the fact that for a few days, countries of the entire world can compete for their countries pride without bombs and bloodshed. World class athletes without professional class egos and payrolls. Jeff
