Ed-

Yeah, I've traveled the Outer Banks. Very different scenery. Not too commercialized until you hit the northern section of Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills. Lots of lighthouses and quaint villages on southern end. Wright Bros. museum and hang gliding/sand surfing a must at Kill Devils Hills. Beautful and expensive homes in Duck.

There is a bike rally there over Easter weekend that was started a couple of years ago that is now a pretty big event. I'll find out more if you are interested.

In August you have to hit it right or weather can be a problem. Hurricane season is in August & September. Water temps at southern end can be 15 degrees warmer than at northern end.

Randy - I think Ed is trying to fool us. He was there with the Wright Bros during the 'first flight'

AC,
You might be on to something there.
The Wright Bros. are from Ohio you know.

An aside- Ohio and NC DOTs were spatting over the use of the the Wright Bros. accomplishments on their respective license plates. It was eventually settled with NC using "First In Flight" and Ohio using (I think) "Birthplace of Aviation".

I stand corrected.

Were they raised in Ohio? What's the Ohio connection or am I totally off base here?

Orvile and Wilbur owned a bicycly shop in Dayton, OH. That is where they got the idea to build a plane. They made a small wind tunnel to try out their invention. They believed the published works of a guy who actually had it all wrong so it took them years to get past that part. They went to Kitty Hawk (only one of them, to save money) by train and tried out the plane. They did not succeed the first year. In either the second or third year they were successful. They lived in a tent, I think on Kill Devil Hill while down in N.C. They went there since it is always windy.
Their bicycle shop is now a museum. It is just west of downtown. There is also a big, flat plain area in Dayton (east of downtown) where they later flew the plane trying to interest investors and other enthusiast.
They lived in Dayton most of their lives. They had been fascinated by flight for years and worked on the plane for years before becoming successful.
Ohio does or did have "Birthplace of Aviation" on the license plates. I am not sure if it is still on them. Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is named for them. GE jet engine plant started as the Wright plant back during the 30s or 40s and it is still there in Evendale right on I-75, north of Cincinnati.
