On January 23 the country goes back to the voting booths to elect the new government or perhaps re-elect the old one.I'm not sure how many of you actually watch the politics north of the border or are even remotely interested in them,so I thought I'd give you a quick overview at a glance.

1.The Liberals....currently in power and have been for some time. They have been losing ground rapidly because of numerous scandals and enquiries in recent years.

2.Progressive Conservatives.....gaining momentum because of Liberals downfalls. They promise lots and have a leader a lot of people feel has a hidden agenda that may run the country into the ground causing scepticism.

3.National Democratic Party(NDP)....who have never won a federal election and always run behind the other 2...

4.Bloc Quebecois....who believe in separation of Quebec from the rest of the country and sovereignity for the province

...and those are pretty much our choices, with the exception of a few smaller parties trying to gain some ground.
I've watched a few debates and am totally undecided.
Makes me wonder...on average,of all the promises a party makes during the election...how many do they actually deliver?

Actually I've been noticing for many months Prime Minister Paul Martin's vocal jabs at President Bush over several issues. I've been wondering how popular he is in Canada and if his views are generally representative of most Canadians.

Is the air of corruption the reason for the elections? Was there a "no confidence" vote by the Parliament?

It was interesting in December when Conservative Leader Stephen Harper, told the U.S. Ambassador to Canada David Wilkins to keep his nose out of the Canadian elections and to stop making remarks about the candidates. What was interesting about this was that Wilkins (a political appointee of the Bush administration) was making negative comments about liberal PM Martin. The conservative Harper even said he didn't think PM Martin had been effective or tough enough in dealing with Washington. Politics sure make strange bed-fellows!

So what's the mood north of the border; not yours necessarily, but in general terms in Canada?

It's good to know other countries are also faced with lousy choices for leaders.

Bob,thanks for posting.
I've personally been appauled the way Canada handled some of the Canada-U.S. relations lately and it in no way reflects the way majority of people think.
As of late, the TV,newspaper and radio ads are just brutal....bashing each other to no end. They say negative campaigns work well...I would tend to disagree.all I'm interested in is what a candidate or a party has to offer and not earning brownie points on someone else's expense.
We'll see!

You are right Bob, both of our Countries have had absolutely pathetic choices when it comes to running our
Countries. Some how we have to fix the system so that good qualified people will want to take on the job.....we deserve much better....(however there is a saying....."you get the government you deserve," doesn't say much for us).

Society has the power to change things, but this means sticking together....which is very hard in a me, me, me society.

2 fabulous Countries, enormous resources.....run by complete, pay me back, millionaires, who's only agenda is to feather their own nest's. These people are so far removed from the everyday world of real people, they could careless about us. This really is unacceptable, but will we have the courage to DEMAND change???????

I would like to think so!

He probably does that on the side to pay for some of the campaign expenses.

What is really pathetic is the current Prime Minister has, over the past year or two, governed only in reaction to polls. They are not doing what is right, or what they promised, or even governed by their traditional party policies. They only care about getting re-elected, not even about following their own beliefs. The Prime Minister has bashed Bush (and really all Americans) only because he believes most Canadians are anti-American (that may be true of our enormous immigrant population). If he thought Canadians loved Americans (some of us do), they he would be down there shaking Bush's hand whenever possible). The government has flip-flopped on a number of issues including one where they announced a tax policy change that wiped out billions out of our stock market only to change their mind later on (after leaking the info to some resulting in massive stock market swings again). The have also had many scandals including funnelling taxpayer dollars to friends in return for..........nothing - no work done at all. It is truely pathetic.

Add to that, we have among the highest tax rates in the world (Ontario - 45%) and rather than return any surplus to those who paid in, they blow it on social programs, scandals, election spending, etc.

It looks like Canadians in general are finally fed up with the current party and will likely vote in the Conservatives.

(FYI - Conservatives in Canada would be similar to Republicans in thought process - although maybe more centrist, while Liberals are like Democrats and our New Democrats are like far left wing Democrats - or Nader)

In spite of the horrendous governing, Canada is actually doing quite well economically due to our large natural resources - primarily our large oil reserves.

Canadians always seemed doomed to be forced to pick the Guy who is the best Liar for their Government.

The current Government is constantly getting caught bilking the system and overfeeding themselves at the expense of the overtaxed common guy, at the same time offering tax benefits and cuts to the rich? ... We are talking Millions and Millions of dollars in a country that has a relatively small population. And they can't figure out when to shut up. They have embarrassed our citizens in front of our neighbors by inaction and false threats.

We could vote for the other guy, Harper, but he represents a party that was lead by the most despised Prime Minister in the history of our country, Brian Mulrooney....

Why doesn't someone offer themselves to get the people of this perpetual rut ? Someone other than a french Lawyer ?

Canadian Politics really pi$$es me off...because it is the most disturbing exersize in futility I've ever seen ...

Me ? I'm voting for Jack Layton,
why ? Cause his party has never had the chance to show Canadians what they can do.... and the other guys just seem to take turns screwing us...

I love

but the Politics blo...

Absolutely great comments from Wayne, Dr., Bob, and Thunder

way to go fellas !!

Hali, the first part of your comment is absolutely correct, the second part is absolutely false (although most Canadian believe it to be true - and is the spin that the New Democrats make). The Canadian "rich" (which the government views as anyone making over about $75,000) get taxed at the highest marginal tax rate of virtually anywhere in the world and subsidize the lifestyle of every other Canadian. And every tax cut in recent memory only affects the low to middle class - the rich never get tax breaks because there are not enough of them to worry about losing their votes.

My view is that tax cuts should go to those who actually paid the taxes in the first place.

You may want to give a second thought on who you are voting vote. While the NDP has never been in power in the federal government, we did have them in power here in Ontario and it was a disaster. And Layton was also a horrendous city councillor in Toronto. The NDP believes in more taxes and more government interference.

all in fun

Politics - ahhhhh

Don't disagree with this, but what person in their right mind would want the job?? It's not just handling the Presidential job......it's dealing with all the other people in the government too........

Hey Wayne....
There is no doubt that Canadians are taxed to death.... we are world famous for that.....
I based my opinions on information I got from a long time friend who is a business owner with over 50 employees and a yearly pay that is more than generous... he tells me that he can put his money into several financial plans that allow him to avoid paying alot of income tax... he would have had to pay 47% and ended up paying 18%. He writes off many personal expenses such as fuel, insurance, meals, vehicles etc.
Last year I paid $12,000 in tax, brought home $31,000. I paid 15% hst on almost everything I bought with my $31,000, deduct another $4650....
So basically the government took me for over $16,000 last year, and I didn't get a refund...
I paid for all my gas, insurance, meals, car payments...everything. Does that seem fair ? Is this my punishment because my parents couldn't''t afford to pay for college for me...?
The poor stay poor, and the rich get richer...That's life,

I'm sure glad that the NDP got us our health care program many years ago...

I don't know much about Jack Layton ...
But I do know that my pal, the businessman... doesn't want them ( NDP) in because "they will make business's pay more taxes and it would cost me a fortune".

What a choice....vote for the lying cheaters, or the incompetent...

I will always wonder why we never see Policemen or Teachers or other regular folks running for government that know the ins and outs of life, the grass roots as they say.
Why should anyone believe that these wealthy Politicians know anything about what the majority of the people want...or need....??
Most of them have never known what it is to work your guts out, come home beat and wake up deeper in debt than you were when you went to sleep...

sorry about the rant... fighting injustice is a hobby of mine..

Well here's my spin on this terrible topic.

1. Yah the Liberals have been caught alot I hate that part big time.

2. Steven Harper scare's the Hell out of me I just don't trust his smile Hope I'm wrong I'm afraid he will be our next Prime Minister.

3. NDP GOD HELP US They almost ruined our Province and it looks like our BC residents will put these clowns in again How soon they forget. Fast Ferries and that is just one of the many

4. I agree with Wayne give tax breaks to the people who pay the tax. Hali sorry Jack Layton just doesn't cut it for me. Unfortunatley as much as I'm -issed off with the liberals I have to go with them as the others just don't cut it for me.

5. Our neighbours in the USA we need on our side more than anyone and I feel Martin has the best leader to deal with them on a business and personal level for the better of our country..

That is all from the desk of this Cub Reporter LOL
