I started with IBM 05/12/69. In 1993 IBM had what they called a surplus action. I was offered and accepted a bridge to retirement. I left as a regular employee on 07/30/03 and came back as an contract employee on 08/02/03. My retirement was effective 06/01/99. I have continued to work at IBM as a contract employee since 07/03. Now IBM is off shoring much of the jobs and the department in which I currently work grows smaller and smaller. Eventually it will no longer exist or just be a handful of people with probably no contractors at all. I have been anticipating being let go at any given moment for quite some time now. They have also continued to take away contractors benefits such as paid vacation, until all I had left was my salary. Even with that I have not had a raise in over 3 years. This past year I have been looking for another job but until now without much success. However out of the blue an IBM Business Partner whom I support, offered me a job. To make a long story short I accepted. I start my new job 01/16/06. The company is in Chicago, so I will get to work out of my home. In addition to no longer having to commute to/from work, I got a nice increase in salary. They are also providing me an laptop computer and an cell phone allowance. Not to mention paid vacation, sick leave and all the other normal benefits. I am very excited and yet also sad. The happy part is obvious. I am sad as to what is happening at IBM and having to leave a place I have spent 36 plus years. I am at work today closing out the year. I am giving Manpower & IBM my two weeks notice today.

...I remember IBM in the sixties....I was a computer programmer and worked with an IBM 360 Model 20...state of the art in 1969....I almost went to work for them but had a better offer from Uncle Sam

times change, jobs change, the world ain't what it used to be(good or bad)....hope you the best for a happy and prosperous new year...

Rich, sounds like things work out really well. You will get over not working for IBM in short order and be a lot happier now that you can hang on POA all day while working. lol
Happy New Year and congrats on the new job.

Good luck to you Rich...I understand your feelings and sympathize with them, but it sounds like your new venture will be much better and you are excited about it, so you have 1/2 the battle won already. (been there and done that)

Congrats Rich. Whew, the AS400, I worked on the silverlake project years ago. I changed jobs every two years until I came to where I am now - fast approaching 10. My next move is out of technology....

Congratulations and best of luck to you! After an extended unemployment period, I started work again last March. I'm also a contractor (no benes). This job was to last 4-6 weeks when they hired me. They sent me an email around first part of October saying they were giving me 5 paid vacation days, 2 paid sick leave days, and 7 paid holidays, effective the day after Thanksgiving. They laid me off 2 weeks before Thanksgiving. I was there 8 months. I hope the new year brings me a new job too.

Good luck Rich on your new job! Working out of your house and still with all the bennys...how cool is that!

This country has to stop all the outsourcing!!! I swear...we're slitting our own throats.

Hopefully I will be at my new position this year too. I'm definitely saying my prayers.

Rich I wish you the very best! Outsourcing will come to an end someday as does a bucket with a hole in it. When there are no more jobs to give away perhaps then the process will be reassessed. We'll show us!

I miss the good old days of economic patriotism.
