What do you think of telemarketers calling and envading your peace ?I said "don't call me, I'll call you" 2 more points for the good guys !!
DirecTV Inc. will pay $5.35 million to settle charges that its telemarketers called households listed on the national do-not-call registry to pitch satellite TV programming, Federal Trade Commission officials said Tuesday. The proposed settlement, if approved by a federal judge in Los Angeles, would be the FTC’s largest civil penalty in a consumer protection case.

I'm on the Do Not Call list and I used to get REALLY irate with clowns calling me selling ANYTHING. I have to admit that for the past six months or so I haven't received many phone calls, except from the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) and my alma mater Johns Hopkins.I have DirectTV, but I don't have any sympathy for any of the Cable or Satellite companies. I'm curious how everyone feels about the proposal to let customers select and pay ONLY for the programs they want??? The telecommunications companies say it will cost consumers more, which is exactly what I would except them to say. And I suppose it's likely some cable TV networks will go under because they are no longer part of a bundled programming package. I may be all wrong on this but I have the feeling the cable/satellite entertainment companies have been ripping people off for a long time and it's time for them to stop. I'm glad the technology is available to give us more to choose from than just broadcast stations whether it is cable or satellite. The marketing of a lot of the cable and satellite compnaies can be irritating but the almost total lack of customer service in the industry is what bothers me most. It seems to me like Bob mentioned that a number of channels would never be seen by a majority of people if we could order just the channels we watch. I guess we would select our local stations, ESPN (& ESPN 2), Discovery, TLC, HGTV, VH1, E!, Weather Channel, and maybe a few others, but that leaves a lot of channels with no exposure in our house.

Oops, posted on wrong subject.I will add to this one though. I could drop 12 out of the 20 channels we get and not even know they were gone. Would like to add ESPN2, Discovery, HGTV, and Disney. This message has been edited by Kruisin Kat on 12-13-2005 at 05:05 PM

à la carte programming... It would cost more PER CHANNEL, but most consumers would end up paying less when ordering only 5 or 10 out of a possible 100+ channels. Telecommunications companies are afraid of losing $$$. However, there are a lot of competitors. Once there is a new kid on the block willing to offer à la carte programming in order to attract customers, then the rest will have to follow suit in order to keep their customer base.

Gee - I feel sometimes like the only one left with a real antenna. I live outside town in a rural area. I can get NBC, ABC and PBS with an antenna and with a signal booster (PBS only if all the computers and wireless are turned off). My husband thinks we already watch too much tv with only 3 channels; he's probably right (we still channel surf with 3 channels). I kind of agree with him -- but there are a few channels I'd really like to get. Although ... when I travel for work and have access to cable in a hotel, there really never seems to be much on. If I could get select channels maybe the cost of sat tv would be more palatable. As far as intrusive calls, we're on the no call list but I let my husband answer the phone first. He's more apt to hand up on the caller than me! He's my call screener. I could get caller id -- but I'm too cheap to give the phone company more $ when I have a built in screener. Janet

I have only had cable for about 6 months in my entire life. When I had it, I still watched the major networks and PBS mostly and thought it was a total waste of about $ 50 a month to have cable. It was okay for the first month but then the same shows, movies started repeating themselves 15 times a day and I lost interest. I don't watch that much TV anyway, almost none in the summer.

I would prefer to select my own channels. Give me Speed, HGTV, TLC, BYU-TV and a couple of movie channels and I would be happy!db

a la carte would be preferrable.Speaking of cable TV, did you hear about the town in Texas that changed its name to Dish? This was a publicity deal with Dish Networks. The people who live in Dish, TX will be getting free satellite TV for a few years out of th deal. I heard on the street that Snoop Dog's publicist is looking for a town in Idaho that will change its name to "Udapimp." Residents of Udapimp, Idaho will get free Snoop Dog CD's for life. (Just kidding...)

Ed said all he seen there were two forks on the roof wrapped in aluminum foil I have about 70+ channels of cable,,,,but don't watch alot of biased network tv news,,,,,watch just two or three shows per week,,plus SPEED, A&E, and cable Fox News. When I learn to speak Spanish,,,I'll be able to understand about 10 more channels, lol.

A.C., when we were in Nova Scotia in 99 or 2000 we stayed at an inn that did not have a TV. When one of the women with us complained, the guy said, "what would you watch? we don't have any access to TV stations". I would presume they still don't have cable in the upper half but I would think they could get Dish or something similar. My kids have about 1000 channels and when I babysit I am amazed over the fact there is nothing worth watching a lot of the time. Last week I watched FIELD OF DREAMS. I have that on tape.
