October 14 1940s Justin Hayward, singer with the Moody Blues, is born. 1946 1950s What will become The Crickets (featuring Buddy Holly) opens a show for Bill Haley & The Comets in their hometown of Lubbock. A talent scout sees Holly and arranges for the singer and his group to record some demos. 1955 Elvis releases his best song of the ‘50s, if not his career, “Jailhouse Rock.” 1957 1960s The Who’s blistering “I Can See For Miles” is released in the U.S. It peaks at #9 and is the group’s biggest pop chart success of the ‘60s… and ‘70s, for that matter. 1967 1970s The publishing company that owns Little Richard’s “Good Golly Miss Molly” sues John Fogerty for copyright infringement on “Travelin’ Band.” The suit is eventually dropped. 1971 KISS unleashes “Rock & Roll All Nite.” 1975 Linda Ronstadt sings the “The National Anthem” to open the third game of the World Series between the L.A. Dodgers and the New York Yankees. 1977 2000s “The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Live At Berkeley” hits the stores. With drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Billy Cox, Hendrix Rocks through “Johnny B. Goode,” “Machine Gun” and “Purple Haze.” The concert was recorded in June of ’69 – a mere 34 years earlier. 2003 Ozzy Osbourne cancels his upcoming European tour due to the effects from medication he’s taking for tremors. Osbourne says he is uncomfortable around people. That’s not a pleasant feeling to have if you`re a singer. 2003 STP’s singer Scott Weiland files for divorce from his wife of three years, Mary Weiland, claiming “irreconcilable differences.” The couple has two children and separated in September of 2002. 2003 Angry fans riot when Punk bands The Exploited and Total Chaos cancel their Montreal show. That’s just what you’d expect Punk fans to do. The show was cancelled because some members of the U.K.’s The Exploited were denied entry into Canada. That`s a surprise. 2003 Anyone for pre-owned photos? Elton John, a collector of modernist photographs, auctions part of his collection at Christie`s in New York. There’s bidding on works by Edward Steichen, Robert Mapplethorpe and Ansel Adams. 4,000 photos are on the block. 2004
