Grand Funk Railroad guitarist Mark Farner is born. Injury ends Farner`s high school football career and leads to his taking up the guitar. 1948
1960s
Bob Dylan gets his first press notice. The New York Times music critic says Dylan is "a cross between a choir boy and a beatnik." That`s about right. 1961
The Everly Brothers and Bo Diddley begin a tour of Britain. But the real news is another act on the bill: The Rolling Stones are on their first tour. 1963

"We`re An American Band," written and sung by Grand Funk drummer Don Brewer, becomes the band`s first #1 single. 1973
William Tell he ain`t. As part of his birthday celebration Jerry Lee Lewis attempts to shoot a bottle out bass player Norman Owens hand. Other versions of the story state Lewis was attempting to shoot a bottle in the distance or holes into his office door. Take your pick. Either way, Lewis plants two slugs in Owens` chest. Fortunately, Owens recovers (and sues). Lewis is charged with discharging a firearm within city limits. 1976
Two Rockpile cohorts Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe are on the singles charts. Lowe reaches #12 with "Cruel To Be Kind." Meanwhile, Edmunds "Girls Talk" anchors the #65 slot. A couple of interesting covers also sit on the charts. Cheap Tricks` reworking of Fats Domino`s "Ain`t That A Shame" peaks at #35 and Robert Palmer`s version of Moon Martin`s "Bad Case Of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor) is lodged at #14. 1979

On a motorcycle trip from L.A. to the Grand Canyon, Bruce Springsteen stops in bar in Prescott, Arizona and ends up jamming with the band. Overhearing a waitresses` dire financial situation Springsteen latter mails her a check for $100,000. 1989

David Lee Roth whacks himself with a staff while performing a 15th century samurai move onstage. Fortunately, he wasn`t using a sword. The self-inflicted injury forces the cancellation of his tour. 2003
