September 28,

1960s
"The Freewheelin` Bob Dylan," his second album, is released. One the same day, The Beach Boys peak at #15 with "Little Deuce Coupe." 1963

New York DJ Murray The K gets a copy of The Beatles "She Loves You" and plays it on the air. It`s the first Beatles song broadcast in the U.S. And that`s how Murray The K became the fifth Beatle. 1963

The Beatles` score a #1 hit with the seven minute-plus ballad "Hey Jude." At the other end of the charts The Who`s raucous "Magic Bus" stalls at #25. Go figure. Also, Moody Blues "Days of Future Past" hits the album charts. 1968

The announcement is made that Janis Joplin has left Big Brother & The Holding Company for what turns out to be a brief and checkered solo career. 1968

John Lennon records his blistering "Cold Turkey." He has a pretty impressive backing band - guitarist Eric Clapton, fellow Beatle Ringo Starr on drums and Manfred Mann bassist (and friend from The Beatles Hamburg days) Klaus Voorman. Yoko is in there as well. Lennon originally presented the song his fellow Beatles for inclusion on "Abbey Road" but they passed on it. 1969

1970s
Eric Burdon provides the talking/singing ad-libs and War serves up the groove for "Sill The Wine." It goes gold. 1970

David Bowie sells out New York`s Carnegie Hall. That`s the power of Ziggy Stardust. 1972

Artist relations 101: Be patient. A&M Records sues George Harrison because he`s late with his "33 1/3" album. Harrison is suffering form hepatitis at the time. 1976

Former Wings guitarist Jimmy McCulloch dies at the age of 26. No cause is listed. 1979

1990s
Dire Strait`s "On Every Street" hits the streets. Also, R.E.M.`s "Shiny Happy People" gets no further than #10 on the pop charts. 1991

Creed`s "Human Clay" is released. 1999

2000s
New releases and re-packages are out... Cream`s "Disraeli Gears," which features “Sunshine of Your Love,” “Strange Brew,” and “Tales of Brave Ulysses” is reissued as a two-CD package. This deluxe edition contains a 24-page booklet, demos, songs that didn`t make the album and live BBC performances. Sounds like a collection of everything Cream (Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce & Ginger Baker) did during that period. The original album was released in `67. Mick Fleetwood issues his third solo album, “Something Big,” with guest appearances by Jackson Browne, Fleetwood Mac bassist John McVie and former Mac guitarist Jeremy Spencer. Mark Knopfler presents his fourth solo album, "Shangri-La.” Touchstones include the "California sound" and pre-Beatles U.K. instrumentals. Canada`s No Warning unfurls “Suffer, Survive.” They are the first group signed to Linkin` Park`s label, Machine Shop Recordings. No Warning also tours with Linkin` Park. Nice how that works. Also, the "MTV2 Headbanger`s Ball, Vol. 2" compilation is released. The double disc package contains songs by Slipknot, Korn, A Perfect Circle, Drowning Pool, Damageplan and Black Label Society. 2004

The last two nights there was a special on Bob Dylan by Martin Scorcese on PBS, locally. I was never a big fan of his but I do like a few of his songs. I can't understand the words to hardly any of them, however.

I watched that special and enjoyed it a lot. I guess I never realized what smart-a$$ he was early in his career. I've always liked Dylan's music.

My absolute favorite line is from his song Positively 4th Street: "I wish that just one time you could stand inside my shoes, then you'd know what a drag it is to see you..."

The Al Kooper interview was very interesting, especially when he talked about the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and Mike Bloomfield. It was pretty cool that the special ended with the concert where he was heckled for playing electric. That recording was released several years ago and it's pretty good.

The most interesting part of the special was Dave Van Ronk, who died in 2002. He wrote House of the Rising Son, which is on Dylan's first LP. When Van Ronk tried to play that song, people would get on him because he didn't play it like Dylan! He later got satisfaction when the Animal recorded that song and people didn't want to hear Dylan's version anymore.

I did a search on Amazon to see who else recorded House of the Rising Son and it turns out Duane Eddy, of all people did a Dylan tribute CD and his version blew me away!!!
