Saudi Air:

"Thank you Dallas ATC. Acknowledge cleared to land on runway 9R. Allah be Praised!"

Dallas ATC:

"Tower to Egypt Air 711--You are cleared to land westbound on runway 9R."

Egypt Air:

"Thank you Dallas ATC. We are cleared to land on runway 9R. Allah is Great."

Pause: Static..............
Saudi Air:
"DALLAS ATC! DALLAS ATC!!!"

Dallas ATC:

Saudi Air:

I like the joke and everyone understands the conflicting directions. lmaso!

But to be accurate from a pilot perspective (if I haven't screwed it up) ATC would clear 1 plane to land on 9R and the other plane to land on 27L. This is still the collision course stated in ATC terms.

You would be correct. You can not land westbound on runway 9. The runway number is given based on compass heading. Runway 9 gets it name because it's heading would be one of 090 091 092 093 etc.

Aren't the runway numbers the degrees in a circle. 9 equals 90 or East. 18 would be 180 or south, 27 would be 270 or West. I do not know if that is correct. I assumed that is what it meant.

That is correct Ed, zero is magnetic north (not true north). In my lifetime the FAA has changed runway numbers because of a shift in magnetic north.

Shift in Magnetic North? Buy a bigger magnet in Moddesville General Store and re-do it. That is probably going to get blamed on global warning soon.
