This is all WAY before my time, but Gene Vincent I think had the big hit. Carl Perkins also recorded the song.

Gene Vincent is a name I don't think I have ever heard. That was a pretty big hit in the (early)? 50s. Maybe a little later. II thought it was someone I knew of, at least.

Yes, Gene Vincent was the original artist.

However, Steve Allen did a funny parody of the song on one of his late night talk shows several years (actually decades) ago.

Talk about dating myself!!!
