I was there, and it was one of the most boring races I've ever been to, till the last few laps. I now understand why Nascar draws 4 to 5 times the fans for their races.

There's just nothing like door to door racing. If only they'd get rid of those stupid restrictor plates.

Maybe if they can figure out how to keep everyone alive doing 200 mph in the stock cars they would do away with the plates.
Isn't the purpose of the plates to keep the speeds down so there are less deaths....?
or was it so that one car wouldn't get 3-4 laps ahead of everyone and make the race boring ?

I am constantly amazed at the size of the crowds at the Nascar events...

I remember Nascar racing before restrictor plates, and I don't think there were any more fatal wrecks then (in the modern era). Also, there was never a time when any of the cars were so much more dominant than the rest of the field, that they ran away with it. Now they just run like a big freight train, which causes more wrecks.

Nascar cars average around 180-185 mph at the super speedways, which isn't much slower than IRL cars. Yesterday's laps at MIS averaged around 192 mph.

Kraut - yesterday's Michigan laps averaged 211 to 218 mph at speed. The yellow lights may have brought down the average speed of the race down to 190 range,,but not when at full speed, which was most of the race. Indy cars also have been slowed down with rules concerning wing angles for downforce, reduction in engine size, turbos gone, wickerbills, etc. I remember the first race at Fontana California with the Indy cars >>>> they were running speeds over 240mph [avg laps] to qualify! With the death of Greg Moore,,,speeds were brought down.

I, like you, would like to see higher speeds,,,that is what motor sports are about, but the ND cars would probably take off like an airplane at over 240. As for NASCAR, I think restrictor plate racing is making it more dangerous with 43 cars running.

dangerous..... but that means more exciting... fans want to see crashes without the deaths...
if they went any faster.. the whole car would be in the crumple zone..

One thing that seemed very noticeable with the indy cars was that when they showed the in car camera footage they looked like they were going much slower than they were but the Nascar views seem faster....

AC, The pole sitter for yesterday's race qualified at a lap speed a little over 218mph. I know they run faster down the straightaways and can reach speeds of 230mph, but the 192 average speed is what was shown on the scoreboard. This was before all the late caution flags.

I'm not badmouthing the IRL, or open wheel racing. I just think that oval racing is much more exciting on the Nascar circuit. On the other hand, open wheel racing tends to be more exciting on the road courses.

Yesterday's race had a runaway leader for most of the race, and he could have come close to lapping the entire field had it not been for cautions. There was very little passing going on, so not much excitement. You don't need crashes to generate excitement, but you do need competition. I know that not all the IRL races are like this, that's why I said that yesterday's race was boring.

By the way, Danica ran a terrible race. Maybe she didn't have a good car yesterday, but it looked to me like she was afraid to pass or mix it up in traffic. Every time she got close to another car, she backed off. I wasn't impressed.

I don't think they have restrictor plates in the NHRA. That is still about the most wide open horsepower raceing

heres a great concept....
extend the track length to half mile...
better yet make the run 4 hours long !

you can compare apples to oranges ...

but the findings aren't worth much ..
