Jim - actually,,,the DeLorean was way ahead of it's time in style and features. What killed it was the underpowered AMC motors - no guts, no glory. If DeLorean had gone to the 351 Ford motor as talked about,,,it might have made it?

a friend of mine put nearly 300K miles on his.....still has it I think...there were at least 2 different engine manufacturers involved....seems like one was Oldsmobile...when the cars were discontinued an Olds dealer in Indy had a bunch of them to sell, and sell cheap.... Jim - I believe the standard AMC motor in the DeLorean had a whopping 130 hp,,,,,,then a 175 hp version later??Tangled - I was unaware of a Olds motor in them,,,but anything would have been better.

I never liked the DeLorean either...it was one of those cars like the Bricklin that I could hardly wait for, but they were both very disappointing. I have no use at all for 4WD mud buggies, so I don't like that DeLorean either!! The Delorean handled terrible, had no guts, and was far too heavy!! Maybe a leetle more nose candy would have helped!! I really enjoyed John DeLorean's book though..."On a Clear Day You can see General Motors" it kinda exposed GM for what they really are SCAM ARTISTS! (maybe with the exception of the Corvette)

I guess I have to set you young whipper snappers straight.....I have a Delorean, #6452, so I guess that I do have a fair amount of knowledge about the car. I have owned it for a number of years and it now has 12,123 miles on it. Mr Cat is correct that it only has 130 HP and for all practical purposes it is a dog in terms of speed. But so is the stock Prowler! (A fair amount of pleasant noise but no real performance.) The engine is not an AMC or an Oldsmobile but it is a PRV. It was built by a consortium of Peugeot, Renault and Volvo with most of the recognizable aspects from Volvo. It was never offered in anything other than the standard configuration of 130HP. There were some efforts at a turbo charger but it never made it to production. There were a little over 6,500 made in total, although there were parts made for a significantly higher amount. As a result, there is good availability of replacement parts from several vendors. The car still brings back more than 50% of its original value, in average condition, and that is better then most American cars that I know of! In good condition, it will bring back 100% or significantly more. It is fun to drive and it turns heads even more than the Prowler does, as it is not as common. The service is for the most part reasonable and parts, unlike our Chrysler orphans, are readily available. If you haven't owned one or driven one, then how can you comment on it in terms of speed or handling? The Old Man

I remembered some involvment from Volvo, but I was thinking there was a second engine in the last year or so...were they distributed by Oldsmobile the last year ???I just remember the Olds dealer in Indy being flooded with them when production ended...they had a dozen or more available at one time.......my Delorean trivia obviously ain't much and I will naturally defer to the guy that owns one...

What makes you think that I haven't driven one "old man"?? I have driven several different DeLoreans along with several Bricklins. Never owned either one because they both were Turds. As for retaining their value...have you priced a clean Edsel lately??

By the way...my Prowler is as fast in the 1/4 as an "out of the box" '69 B engined Road Runner (which I also owned)

Absolutely! I've always liked the Deloreon, although I've never driven one. But your statement describes 99% of the persons that knock the Prowler for it's lack of a V8...
