It's starting to look like the muscle car wars of the late 1960s are coming back for real. Following this year's introduction of the Dodge Charger, the next muscle car name to be resurrected will be the Dodge Challenger, according to a report in the industry weekly Automotive News.

The Challenger will be based on the same platform as the Charger, which shares its mechanical underpinnings with the Chrysler 300 and the Dodge Magnum wagon, according to the report. The newspaper cites industry sources including outside analysts familiar with the development program.

No-one with Chrysler Group, the division of DaimlerChrysler responsible for Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles. would talk about the program, Automotive News said.

Unlike the Charger, the Challenger will be a two-door car, according to the report. That would put it in direct competition with the recently redesigned Ford Mustang and the Pontiac GTO. The current Charger has four doors.

Like the Charger, 300 and Magnum, the Challenger will be available with an optional V8 "Hemi" engine, Automotive News said.

When it was originally introduced for the 1970 model year, the Challenger was a small "Pony Car" competitor to the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro.

The car is scheduled to be introduced in 2009, Automotive News said. The report said the company expects to sell 60,000 to 70,000 Challengers a year.

...I owned the first HEMI Challenger ever built, I would sure like to see MOPAR return to the "Pony Car" street wars.....makes me feel young again just thinkin' about it....I don't want a 4 door HEMI Challenger, I don't want a station wagon HEMI Challenger....I want the Firepower with the HEMI Challenger name plate on it....

the first HEMI Challenger R/T SE ever made....

Spoons ... to quote Paris Hilton (and that is very rare for me to say, but ...) "now that's HOT!" That would grab some Mustang attention for sure

If you "ain't rowing gears, you ain't enjoying the feel!"

A Hemi with a 6 spd will tell me that the German's are not the only ones running D-C. The gear heads are"

If the same clowns who designed the new Charger also design the new Challenger, then I'm betting the new Challenger will be a station wagon!

Great picture SPOONS!!!! Now that's a design I could get excited about!

As much as I hate to admit it and while I also wish the new Charger was a two door. It was actually pretty smart of DC to make the Charger a 4 door. Many fans of the the original Charger are now grown and have families. For them a two door car is not practical. Having four doors broadens the market for people who want a muscle car, but also need a family car.

So can we expect a "Dukes of Hazzard (Part 2) to have a pair of Chargers? The only way to tell them apart will be what's on the roof, a "gumball" or the Confederate Flag !

Spoons,
Thanks for sharing the pictures. If DC does either one I may rethink my pending Stang purchase in about 2 years!

The purple drawing is definately a Challenger but the black and white drawing looks like a 71 Cuda.
