Well, it started out as a nice day... In the course of my job, I occasionally have to go into the field, and that involves a degree of danger. (I draw up all the piping you see in refineries, nuclear power plants, offshore rigs, etc.) You might recall the Phillips 66 plant explosion several years back... I was at the plant next door when it blew... Another time when I was to go to another plant, they decided they were not ready for me to go yet, so they held me back for a week. During that week, a transformer exploded between the plant and the office I was to be in, but it was located right along the path I would be regularly walking to go into the plant from the office for measurements. Had I not been held back, I very well could have been near the transformer when it blew. Fast forwarding to today... I was blissfully at my desk drawing up some piping when all of a sudden there was an explosion 5 feet away from me. Scared the hell out of me. The company I work for is not at a plant site but they do have their own fabrication shop on site. I had no idea what went BOOM, but it was time to find out... nobody had been in the area for about 30 minutes, but I thought maybe someone left something in the microwave that somehow or another had built up pressure inside and blown. It really was a loud explosion and I didn't really think that was it, but you never know... Ever so carefully, I pushed the button on the microwave oven door, and stepped back... nothing... The only other thing in the vicinity was the trash can, so I looked in there... just a plastic bag with an orange juice in the bottom of it... Well, I figured that wasn't it either. WRONG! It turns out that someone had left some orange juice in the refridgerator for the past couple months. It had never been opened! A coworker had opened the fridge to get his lunch out and noticed the juice was leaking. When he went to pick it up to throw it away, it sprayed on him, and he tossed it in the trash can. The date on the bottle said to sell before April 15th, 2005. Usually it stays good for a week or two beyond that sell date. Yea, I know, we're 2 months past that date. Anyway, I determined that it was indeed the orange juice that had exploded. How odd, I thought... So I called Oak Farms to let them know of their exploding OJ. They were totally unphased and nonchallant about the whole thing. It turns out that when orange juice is that old (just a mere 2 months past expiration) that it will in fact, explode. Now, the company I work for stocks up on the stuff and has regular luncheons and breakfast meetings. I assume they buy in bulk and have it on hand for some time. Oak farms is aware that after their juice expires, it can explode, but doesn't put a warning to that effect on their label. (Where's Ralph Nader when you need him?) I thought I would pass the info along to you guys so that this kind of an accident doesn't happen at home and hurt someone. A good reason to clean out your own fridge once in a while. Imagine if it had been a gallon jug! In talking to others at work on this, I discovered that a guy collected Coke stuff and had some cans he thought were collectibles. After about 6 months he said they all leaked on him. When he called Coke to tell them, they casually mentioned that Coke will eat thru the can after it sits for a while. He asked about the bottles and was told to store them upright as the Coke will eat away the metal top on those as well. Can you imagine what you are drinking when you drink a canned coke? Good info to remember and pass on...

I had something similar happen to me while working in Egypt. They have strawberry juice you can buy and it is delicious. I'd always get it from the hotel, and then I wanted it at the office, so had someone buy me some. It came in a gallon container and had apparently sat out. My colleague said that the container seemed compressed and didn't want to open it. I said - "what can happen? maybe a little burp out of it?". Well as you said - WRONG. I twisted the top and it EXPLODED ALL OVER THE WHOLE ROOM. It was like a bomb went off. Walls, ceiling, computers, my NOTEBOOK COMPUTER even under the keys, I mean EVERYTHING got nailed. So YES - be cautious with juices that don't have preservatives in them.
