The Deep Impact Spacecraft is due to collide with the Comet Tempel 1 at 1:52 AM on the 4th of July. The are attempting to determine what is inside a comet. The comet is 80 million miles away from earth and the impact should be visible west of a line from Chicago to Atlanta. The force of the collision is equal to about 5 tons of dynamite. The spacecraft was launched on Jan. 12. The rest of the craft will be within 310 miles of the comet and will have about 15 minutes to take photos before it is pelted with debris from the collision. |
