The holiday of Cinco De Mayo, The 5th Of May, commemorates the victory of the Mexicans over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. It is primarily a regional holiday celebrated in the Mexican state capital city of Puebla and throughout the state of Puebla, with some recognition in other parts of the Mexico, and especially in U.S. cities with a significant Mexican population. It is not, as many people think, Mexico's Independence Day, which is actually September 16. http://www.mexonline.com/cinco.htm (the full story)

Wow Ed,

I thought that Cinco De Mayo was only mainly celebrated in the southern states. Guess I was wrong on that one...

We've got a pretty big celebration here in Dallas, but it's really big and crazy in San Antonio.

Time to go to Pappacitas and have some Margaritas and Fajitas with homemade Tortillas.

Ty-K nailed it.
Many folks think it celebrates Mexico's independance from Spain - WRONG! That happened Sept 16, 1821. 40 years later, on May 5 1862, France invaded Mexico and was held off by the Mexican Army at the Battle of Puebla. However, French reinforcements eventually defeated the Mexicans and took Mexico City. Kind of ironic - Cinco de Mayo celebrates the bravery of the Mexican army in a battle that they ultimately lost! AGAINST FRANCE!!
But what the hey - most folks think Cinco De Mayo is when Corona is on sale!

My son's birthday is May 4, so every year, my daughter-in-law throws him a Cinco De Mayo party (they love Mexican food and Mexican Beer! ). We took him to a local Mexican restaurant for dinner last night and they were gearing up for the big day today!

Ron, they probably promote Cinco De Mayo so they can have an excuse to throw a party, in reality. We now have a lot more Mexicans and Central Americans in this area than we did 10 years ago. I don't know how big the celebrations are in those communities. The last few years there were riots near the Univ. of Cincy, and I am positive it was not Hispanics causing the problems, just idiot college kids drinking more than usual. Any excuse to have a party.
The beer companies probably thought they ought to promote Cinco De Mayo to sell more product, but we now have an Hispanic festival at Coney Island, an old amusement partk that is still very nice, every year.

A/C, I think you summarized it quite nicely. I think it is aimed at the college kids and twenty-somethings. Kind of like St. Patrick's Day. Another excuse to get drunk, Irish or not. Gives Irish folks a bad name, they usually try to stay under the radar, or the bridge in Teddy Kennedy's case. lol
