We are planning on getting a sunroom added on to our house, which has vinyl siding. Upon inspecting the house with the fellow from the sunroom place, we discovered that the house is brick under the vinyl siding!

This means we could probably add $20,000 to the value of our house by taking off the vinyl siding to expose the brick. It also means we got a great mortgage since it was calculated without anyone knowing that we were actually buying a brick house.

Has anyone ever heard of anything similar? Why place vinyl siding on a brick house?

I would be a little worried about what they were trying to cover up... hope it was just a fashion decision!

That's great. Most of the time on older houses it's used to cover up LP siding....

TwlightZone Sterling - I believe your home was built over a old Confederate War cemetery. The previous owners were just trying to keep the ghosts OUT................

I haven't said much lately but being 118 years old one has a great deal of insight into matters of this kind.

Now some of you have been a wondering what ever happened to Jimmy....Hoffa that is. I'll be a willing to bet that the boy is buried somewhere 'tween the siding and the brick!

Some of you thought he was in New Jersey but he was trying to work a deal on some shine and was in your neck of the woods about the time that siding was installed.

Other possibility is that the sidling saleman was having a special and decided to do a "deal" for one of his inlaws.

Gotta run as Dew Drop just finished fixing a tuna casserole for lunch with one of Charley Tuna's cousins and I am working up a mighty hunger. Afterwards, Dr. Phil has a really good session on and I gotta figure out what be ah happening.

Wow! That is weird....I've never heard of someone covering brick with aluminum siding..........why would you do that?

If you expose the brick, won't that also raise your taxes on the value of the house when an assessment is done?

We were remodeling one house we bought so we could sell it. The home had the ugliest shag carpeting I ever saw. When we took it off to replace with new carpeting, we discovered that the previous owners had covered over a very expensive and beuatiful wood flooring.

People do some stupid things to homes.....

I gotta agree. There is probably a reason.

How did they fasten it to the brick? You may end up with nine million screw holes to fill up at the least. Alot of mold. Or something worse.

If they have to have permits to build the new room, you can bet the tax appraisers will be out there after it's done. If they see that the home is now brick too (even though it always was) they may double-ding you.

Good Luck.

It is my opinion that the brick was covered for a reason. Carpeting over wood floors was a fashion statement. Siding over brick is a cover up. Could be major cracks in the mortar, or missing mortar. Could be spalling of the brick itself. Could be the brick is effervescing. (which is a cosmetic issue) Could be the brick was not installed level or plumb. Properly installed good quality brick should last over 100 years. Siding is good for 25-30 tops. My advise...leave it on. Do not tear it off. Besides, as already mentioned, you might have to fill thousands of holes. Lots of time and money. Just my 2 cents!

I would take off the siding and sell the scrap aluminum. Hire Alley Cat to fill the holes, he should be out of work soon. I heard from CJ that Mike and Judy are tired of his drunken binges and then polishing the cats with burlap. lol.
