I have a chance to purchase a 64 Merc Parklane that is is pretty good shape for $2500.00... it needs a brake job, probably front and back... any members familiar with this car and know if parts are available ?.. it has a 390 CI, runs well, I think it may need a manifold gasket as well..

opinions ?

UPDATE: he's down to $2000...Its a done deal !! ... bought it today ...

Halicat--what brake parts will you need? If you can find a reliner, you can get the original shoes relined. Probably find an old shop somewhere that still has a rivet tool. If the cylinders are bad and rusted, you can get them rebushed in stainless. lots of luck with new pistons and seals.

Heck with that, locate a 65 & put discs on the front. They fit.

Better yet, why don't you deleiver all three cars. They can use a good home. 64 Merc's are nice looking machines,
heavy, but nice looking.

hey Butchcee,

I drove the car and there is no vibration in the pedal just no stoping power, the pedal seems to bottom out and doesn't seem to be up enough to start with... I think the shoes are worn out but haven't had the wheel off... the car seems to need a do-nut gasket or manifold gasket on one side.. a little noisy... but doesn't burn oil and runs and shifts well...
body, frame , trunk, under the hood look good....

i just didn't want to buy it and then have it sit because I can't find parts... someone must specialize in old Ford parts...

Chassis parts will interchange with 65 & 65 FoMoCo full size. My guess on the pedal issue is a master cylinder IF there are no signs of wheel cylinder leaks. Face it, to be safe consider a 67 or newer dual reservoir master cylinder.
Sure, you'd have to redo the lines off of the master cylinder. So What? The entire brake system (rubber hoses & all) is over 40 (Northern climates) winters old. Replace them as well.
Jim, I don't see a problem here.
Buy it. That's a hell of a package deal!

Thanks for the help guys...

I just looked at the parts cars.... not much there, some nice chrome and the back window... engines have been scavanged.. 2 good rads, side vent windows... thats about it..
the young fella that owns it got it from his grandfather and wants to buy an Integra so will take $2000 ...I'm going to go over tomorrow to crawl underneath and get a closer look. Its got all power windows and they all work, has a little body fill and a 2nd rate paint job...

its just like this only Dark blue...

Critical area for 65 & 6 Fords (and probably Mercs) in the Northern Climates are the two rear crossmembers, especially the one over the rear axle. Rust out is severe issue.

Jim, you have a PM

Halicat, you were agonizing over whether or not to drop $2K on this car????

What was there to think about - it's a no-brainer.

That car is flat-out perfect and bitchen, and you would have been nuts to pass it up!!!

Very nice car - congrats.

You said it best, Don, by describing Heli-coil as a
"no-brainer".

yes, its the power back window.... my uncle had a car just like this back in the 60's... I always liked it and am happy to get this one.....the hesitation was only because it was the last cent I had... I guess i'll always be able to get my $ back.......
the trunk is HUGE......good thing, i may need to sleep in it after my wife finds out I bought it.
