About 5 co-workers and I were leaving work the other night and while walking through the parking lot of the Mall where I work we heard this loud crunch and saw this lady in an Aerostar who hit the front driver's side of a car she was parked next to. I don't know what in the world she was doing, because her and the other car were the only 2 cars in the entire section of the parking lot. She was parked to the left of the other car, facing the same direction and apparently turned too sharp to the right as she was leaving her spot.

Anyway I watched her as I walked to my car and saw her sit there and wait for us to leave and then she took off. So did I...after her!

I had to back my car up and had to be careful not to hit my co-workers or anyone else so she got a little ways ahead of me in the parking lot. I finally got close enough to read her license plate and then pulled alongside her right side just to make myself 100% sure it was her since she was a ways ahead of me before I caught up to her. Sure enough, crunched in passenger's side sliding door. At this point I didn't know the extent of damage to the other car, if any, but hey if it was me I'd sure want to know their license #!!

So I drive back to the mall's parking lot and see that the front bumper was pretty scratched on the car she hit. I sat there for a little bit and then figured that it could be a long time before the owner came out so I wrote a note with my name and phone #, license plate # and description of the car/driver. As I was sitting there the Mall security guy drove by so I flagged him down and explained to him what happened. He said he'd contact the owner of the car and put me down as the primary witness to the accident.

I hope the lady that drove away learns her lesson from this! My wife's old Intrepid had 2 hit and runs that left huge dents in her car and no one left a note or anything. I think that's one of the most cowardly things a person can do.

People just have no respect for other people's property or a moral sense for right and wrong.

Kudos to you for your actions! I don't know what the law is where you live, but here in Michigan, police will not come to an accident in a private parking lot (like a mall). It is up to the individuals involved to go the nearest police station and make out a report. Maybe because we have no-fault insurance here?

I've often wondered how the hit-and-run offender explains the damage to their vehicle? Do they report their own as having also been the victim of a hit-and-run, ya' reckon? Irony! Ya' gotta Love it!

Same here in Az. as CJ reported,,,,,,accident on private property, its up to you to settle the matter and that is quite difficult to do.

To make matters worse, we now have 30% of our drivers on the streets classified as illegal aliens with no insurance or registration of their cars When they hit you, they bolt the scene on foot,,,,,their car is most likely not worth much to start or stolen, so it's no loss for them.

Ray - for sure. They have more rights than we do. They go into a ER,,give phoney name, address, etc and get excellent health care and pay nothing. I go in and have to prove everything before they will see me. They even have more rights going through the criminal court system.

Its the end of the world,,,I tell ya,,,,,the end of the world.

I have heard of stories like yours and you are to be commended for your actions. I have heard also, that people have witnessed the same type accident and watch the offender write and leave a note on the window, only to check after the person left to see a note with nothing but scatches marks on it. They then left their note along with the offender's true info, they copied off their plates and type auto, time of accident and their contact info. You must do this after the offender has left or they will remove the true facts of the accident. What a shame we have folks out there doing this everyday. Thank you for getting involved.
