fact or fiction ??

>>>ENVELOPES AND STAMPS
>>>
>>>I work in a factory and we have 2 employees who used to work in an
>>>envelope factory. They told me that when the machine jams up, they use
>>>whatever water is handy to thin out the glue. This includes water that
>>>they just mopped the floor with. Since then, I've avoided licking
>>>envelopes...
>>>
>>>1.) If you lick your envelopes... You won't anymore!!! A woman was
>>>working in a post office in California. One day she licked the
>>>envelopes and postage stamps instead of using a sponge. That very day,
>>>the lady cut her tongue on the envelope. A week later, she noticed an
>>>abnormal swelling of her tongue. She went to the doctor, and they found
>>>nothing wrong. Her tongue was not sore or anything. A couple of days
>>>later, her tongue started to swell more, and it began to get really sore,
>>>so sore, that she could not eat. She went back to the hospital, and
>>>demanded something be done. The doctor took an x-ray of her tongue and
>>>noticed a lump. He prepared her for minor surgery. When the doctor cut
>>>her tongue open, a live cockroach crawled out!!!! There were roach eggs
>>>on the seal of the envelope. The egg was able to hatch inside of her
>>>tongue, because of her saliva. It was warm and moist... This is a true
>>>story reported on CNN.
>>>
>>>2.) Andy Hume wrote: "Hey, I used to work in an envelope factory. You
>>>wouldn't believe the things that float around in those gum applicator
>>>trays. I haven't licked an envelope for years!"
>>>
>>>3.) To All: I used to work for a print shop (32 years ago) and we were
>>>told NEVER to lick the envelopes. I never understood why until I had to
>>>go into storage and pull out 2500 envelops that were already printed for
>>>a customer who was doing a mailing and saw several squads of roaches
>>>roaming around inside a couple of boxes with eggs everywhere. They eat
>>>the glue on the envelopes.
>>>
>>>I think print shops have a harder time controlling roaches than a

Jim - I do a lot of licking but enjoy the benefits of on-line bank bill paying. Try it, and save a roach.

Is that reference to a Post Office?

If so, carrier or clerk?

This actually happened in New York City a few years ago to the fiance of a guy named George Costanza. Apparently he tried to save money on wedding invitations and the glue was substandard and contaminated. The poor girl ended up dying. I'm not sure where I heard this story. Maybe CNN or Fox News. Either way I am sure it is true since I saw it on a TV show.

Link to tragedy

OK, I shall retain my sense of decorum. As long as my anuity comes on the first of the month, it doesn't matter.
Besides, it's not my world anymore. There's no work ethic left among the craft, and the management has become a legion of "bobble-heads": "Yes sir, Yes sir". It was once a great service. (Ben Franklin is rolling in his grave.) My wife is a (top notch) Bulk Mail Entry Unit clerk with a short time left before she can go. Life goes on.............

This is a system that is severly flawed; (i.e. broken) and no one seems to know how to fix it, much less be willing to. Our local office has had a "revolving door" of postmasters & supervisors in the last 25 years and NOTHING has changed. Last year a supervisor walked into a clerk's office and yelled "You f____ Bi______ (twice), if you ever do that again, I'll Kill you". His reference was relative to something done off the clock and NOT serious. He was 15 feet from the PM when it happened. The PM spent 48 hours trying to sweep the whole thing under the carpet. The supervisor; well he was transfered to another office. The irony is that the same supervisor was transfered into this office because of sexual harrassment in a prior office.
Someone is going to get hurt and it will be another whitewash, "we were not aware....".

Sorry, but I can't let it go.
Zero tollerance my A____ !

Anyone wonder why we even need a post office anymore? The private sector does a much better job. At my place of business they are absolutely always there somewhere between the hours of 10 and 3. About as consistent as the weather.

I appreciate your comments, really. This is an issue of the hypocracy of a Government institution. I am a strong believer that The standard of ethical & moral conduct
must be established & practiced at the top if there is any substance at all. If management refuses to establish
a high level of ethics & morals, than everything becomes symbolism, instead of substance.
"Don't tell me, show me".

In the private sector, someone would be "walking", immediately.
The US Postal Service is (quite possibly) the greatest service institution ever created. The public demanded it, we spent 200+ years setting a standard unmatched anywhere in the world. At one time, I was proud to be a part of it. I retired (honorably) after 30 years, because we ceased to be on the same page. Privatizing it is NOT the answer. Nothing has changed in the two years I've been gone, therefore, I wasn't part of the problem. I now pursue a second career in which I can be proud to contribute........
I think it's best I stay off line for a while.........
My apologies to all P.O.A. members for this outburst.

I've re-read your post. I truely believe we have much in common & you're as powerless to address it as I was.

In any case, good luck!

Licking envelopes......definitely "food for thought"! No pun intended......

However, on the subject of Post Offices, our Post Office here in Rochester Hills is the best! They are very efficient, always have enough windows open, definitely know what they're doing and always polite and friendly. I think they're great.....and with all the shipping I've done with POA.........I'm there a lot!
