I've always said there should be a five day waiting/cooling off period on the sale of office supplies.

There's something really funny about that article.

"a Bettendorf father of three"

"The man asked that only his first name, Mark, be used in this article":

Is it me or did Mark Bettendorf get his whole named published in the article? The man asked that only his first name

I think Bettendorf is the city where they live.

“I used three different kinds of pens,” he said. “I need to be thorough. I’ve got three kids living in my house.”
.
After doing a little research on the Internet and reading about the flaw in the Kryptonite locks, the man went to a Staples store to buy a box of the Bic pens that were specifically cited as the break-in tool. He pulled the ink cartridge out of a pen and widened one end of the barrel slightly by scraping it with his pocket knife, just like a Web site instructed.
.
“I had run home for lunch and was in a hurry,” he said. “Within 30 seconds, I was into the safe with that pen.”

Four pens, the last of which had to be modified based on advice obtained on the Internet? Unless those "three kids" living in your house are pretty darn motivated to get to those guns, this doesn't sound like that much of a security risk.

By the way, seeing as how you're Dad, how about forbidding the kids from touching the guns? My Dad had guns that were not locked up and I wasn't allowed to touch them. Worked at my house when I was a kid.

Didn't work for my friends son. Now he's dead. Gentlemen, lock your weapons.

No kids at my house, 3 guns loaded and in the chamber...always been that way for 30 years...3 inch group at 25 feet with my 45. My father started me at 8 years old.

MD very sorry for your friends kids death...

Do I have something to be afraid of, yes indeed, my father was murdered in this town. Had a private investigator dig up the past and he was told I better leave it alone, the cover up is still in place.

MDProwler,

I'm terribly sorry about your friend's son. If you don't mind my asking, was it a suicide?

No, it was young teenagers playing around. Most kids will do exactly what they are told not to do. With all the pressure in society these days and the fact that more disputes are being settled this way I feel it is wise to keep them safe. No second chances. JMO

My cousins got their hands on my uncle's gun one day a few years back. She was about 3 and he about 5 (I'm guessing). Leaning on the bed on their forearms... she pulled the trigger, shot him... Bullet went in one wrist, traveled up his arm, came out at the elbow, went across to his other elbow, traveled down that arm, and came out at the wrist. They too, were told not to play with guns. Lucky kids... THAT time...
