Attended the annual 1st Look for Charity black tie preview night for the Chicago Auto Show ... and I can say this ... D/C made a HUGE splash with actual in building "drive tests" of their complete new product line, mostly outfitted with Hemi's! One section was the Dodge products of Durango, RAM trucks, etc. another was the Magnum, Charger, etc. another were PT's, Crossfire, Pacifica, etc. and then there were the Jeeps - complete with a 40-degree vertical hill climb and a 50-degree decent, deep water crossing and rock crawl. took up one whole end of McCormick Place -- WAY COOL!

The show has grown into two halls now, with VW, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, Ferrari, Lexus now off in the north hall.

Corvette was well posistioned and was the give-away car. They had the new Z06 on display as well as severla new convertibles. Still one of the best "values" for power, performance and price in a sports car.

Saw the new Lotus' that a few on the board have bought ... cute, but not my style or cup of tea.

Saturn has a new roadster on the horizon called Sky ... will be priced right and very attractive! From the doors forward it resmbles the lines of Corvette, Viper ... well, all the performance sport cars -- all kinda resmembling each other these days =(

The new Mustang convertible was there and looked HOT. If I only could bring myself to owning a Ford.

One of the new cars said to be "introduced soon to the US" was called the Smart car ... from parent company DC and built in northern France ... you think a Prowler is dangerous when hit ... this thing is nothing more than a great gas mileage golf cart!!

Anyway ... lots to see, many cool concepts (yup, the Firepower was there and looked nice), and some exciting new offerings ... I highly recommend this year's show -- bigger and better than ever!

good report Ray....

....DC was letting people drive the Magnum at the MOPAR Nationals last summer.....the 'drive' program seems to be a big hit.....
...big article about the Smart car in the Journal, and how it was not doing well for Mercedes at all....losing lotsa $$...I see it doing even less in the USA....gas is still cheap here...

...Z06 is HOT HOT HOT........

...any pix ???

Sorry ... didn't bring a camera and have even less savy in getting them from the film to the computer =(

The "drive" program was actually with people (probably same marketing company CJ was part of with Prowler?) driving the cars around obsticals and through "ambient noise area" in the case of cars, over wood stacks and cobblestone streets in the case of trucks 'n SUVs and as I mentioned in the case of Jeep ... an extreme course. You the individual could not actually drive ... besides, speeds were kept to like 5 mph -- this was indoors adjacent to all the other car exhibits. They said was first done last year at NY Auto Show ... and definetly overshadowed all the other brands!

It's funny, but start looking close at the Z06 and the Viper ... hood inlet now the same, the duct behind the front wheel now the same as well as the 'bubble top' ... biggest difference, although they didn't share it there, may be the price and availability of the Vette versus the Viper.

Vipers are hand made like the Prowlers were. They only made 2440 or so in 2004. Fairly rare compared to 30000 or so Corvettes. The difference in price is getting closer every year! I was at a Local Hot rod show this year 3 times with My prowler, Viper, & Qvale! About 200 cars. I was parked last in the Row next to 25 Vettes, newer models, not the 50's 60's. I didn't stop taking questions all night on my 3 cars. It was constant. I swear I felt so bad for the vette guys nearby. No one stopped to look at their cars or ask questions. I don't think anyone even noticed them. They are so common today, I hope the new ones get more respect. I've owned a few but I wouldn't trade my Prowler for a new Vette. That is saying something. Snapped one of the Smart cars while in Germany last fall. I swear I saw a guy driving one of these that had to out-weigh the car!
