I'm combining a couple of threads in my twisted little mind...but Ed was talking about the reverence at the Vietnam memorial wall, and on another thread he was talking about Elvis's birthday and Graceland... when I visted Graceland, and made my way outside to the bizarre swimming pool/grave yard area, there were a lot of people that stood on the steps (sort of a concrete ampitheater area) and appeared to be praying or otherwise deep in thought... I'm sorry but I wanted to crack up laughing... the whole place was so surreal and bizarre... that sort of reverence should be reserved for more appropriate places, like your church or a war memorial! One thing I learned on the Graceland tour was that Elvis never wrote a single song. He was just a crooner. Maybe that's true of other singers. Maybe a bunch of them didn't write songs (Bing Crosby, Andy Williams, etc), I don't know. Maybe I'm just young enough (46) to have just missed the crooner era, but it's bizarre to me that Elvis was SOOOOOO BIG when really he was just a singer of songs. I'm not knocking him, I just find it interesting that he was so huge (no pun intended) while other singers remained just singers...

"the Wall" is among the most moving memorials I have ever visited, but then I know many names on there ........the Korean War Memorial is also a real experience.....looks like ghosts marching up the hill.....have to see it in person to fully appreciate it .............. I have been to the Korean memorial once and Vietnam memorial several times. Also the Vietnam memorial display at the Smithsonian. We were all in tears at that one. You could have heard a pin drop. It was like being in a church.

I visited Graceland and at Elvis' grave I knelt down and spoke to The King. He said he was planning a Hawaii reunion show in 2005. Seriously, Graceland is done up in the best Tom Parker tradition. Elvis was a cultural icon who defined a generation and Col Tom Parker was the master of marketing. As far as the Vietnam wall is concerned, I've been three times and still have a difficult time walking past those names and especially the mementos left at the base of the wall. For me it is not a peaceful place to visit. On the other hand, I find the new WWII memorial quite peaceful. It was wonderful visiting with some of the WWII vets when they came to Washington, DC for memorial's opening. I'm just surprised it took this country so many years to recognize the "greatest generation."

Dale, There is absolutely no comparison. You cannot compare apples with Cadillacs. Elvis was extremely popular and changed the face of music. Most singers do NOT write songs. Very few are singer/songwriters. I was never a huge Elvis fan but he was a huge hit in the late 50s and literally set the world on its ear with his hip gyrations, which were quite risque' back then. I remember it very well. He died due to his own overindulgence in food and/or drugs, which may have been a result of a lot of pressure. I don't know. The Viet Nam memorial is about guys who served their country and lost their lives defending us and our way of life. They are heroes. They were almost all very young and had their entire lives in front of them. Elvis got drafted and served so I am not bashing him. The guys in V.N. were so far above Elvis that you cannot compare them. The memorial is nicely done. Graceland is pre-K-Mart chic. I have no desire to see it. I have been to the wall and will return whenever I am in the D.C. area.

I was at Graceland during one of the anniversary's of his death. Believe me it is SERIOUS business. As I was standing at the door to go in a lady behind me grabbed my arm and said "can you feel him?". I didn't dare smile or laugh because I probably wouldn't be here today. I was in the Air Force during Viet Nam and lost some fellow airman. However, I never had to serve in action. Still brings back some very tough times for me.

Not been to either one. Elvis was a cultural icon and OMG I agree with Ed........most singers don't write their own songs. Nonetheless, he was a great influence on the musical world.Bob lost one of his best friends (that he grew up with) in Nam.........God forbid that anything should ever happen to my son during any of his missions in the Middle East (of which there have been a lot already)......but I can tell you that if there had to be a choice between Elvis' gravesite or a military gravesite..........there is no choice!

I have not seen the Vietnam Memorial yet. There is a smaller version of the wall here in NC of natives that paid the ultimate sacifice in Vietnam. It is on the face of a large mound done in brick with the name and rank engraved in the bricks. That is unreal to me. It's hard for me to imagine the amount of names on the national memorial wall.

I think you'll find too that singers that do profess to write there own stuff have ghost writers do alot of it for them.I saw a documentary a while back on the music profession. they eluded to this with a particular singer (forgot who he was) but, anyway, when they decided it was his time, they brought in about 15 to 20 songwriters, the best music mixers and cranked out the album. All he did was belt out the tunes. I guess it's like actors who don't do their own stunts, write the movies, or use other folks for closeups of hands, legs, etc. It's all an illusion. Elvis is big business though. Read where Lisa Marie was selling everything but Graceland for something like $140M. She keeps Graceland (which brings in untold millions yearly). I also think Elvis is the highest yearly grossing dead person.....Go figure. This message has been edited by YellowFever on 01-11-2005 at 04:31 PM
