We all know the importance of families getting together or getting in touch during the holidays. Well, there a bunch young men and a few women at Walter Reed Army hospital recovered from pretty severe wounds they received in Iraq. Many are confined to the hospital and can't go home for the holidays. The NUMBER ONE request at Walter Reed hospital is phone cards. The government doesn't pay long distance phone charges and these wounded soldiers are rationing their calls home. Many will be there throughout the holidays. Yellow ribbons are a great expression of support, but this is a way to do something more personal for these people. If you have the resources, please think about sending phone cards of any amount to: Medical Family Assistance Center They say they need an "endless" supply of these -- any amount even $5 is greatly appreciated. Walmart has good prices on AT&T cards, Sams Club is even better, if you are a member. |

Great idea Bob!! You would think that all the money our federal government wastes on CRAP bills approved by Congress,,,,,that they would pay for LD calls from military or VA hospitals,,,within reason. |

You would think so. I remember when I was overseas a long time ago, the only way we could call home was on a radio patch! The conneciton was terrible, but it was better than nothing! This message has been edited by Bob Miller on 12-09-2004 at 08:09 AM |

There are several programs on going for donating calling cards. The details of one announced by DOD can be seen at http://www.defenselink.mil/releases/2004/nr20040423-0646.html The DOD program allows any American to pay for a phone card through the any of the military commissaries. Janet I should have added --- 800 number is 1 (877) 770-GIFT or the Armed Services Exchanges offer the “Gift From the Homefront” gift certificate for merchandise at these exchange web sites: http://www.aafes.com This message has been edited by jforbes on 12-09-2004 at 12:41 PM |

Thanks for the good information. My thread focuses on the military people who are at Walter Reed Medical Center and who are recovering from severe war injuries received in Iraq. If I read your link correctly, it is more focused on "deployed" troops. Certainly either program is a great help to our military members and is a concrete way for us to show our support to all of them.

I read an article the other day... as I recall, MCI is providing free calls home for our troops at Christmas. I don't know if this is only for those overseas or not but I'm sure that contacting MCI you can find out and pass the info on. |

If you call the number on the back of SAM's club cards, they offer an option to donate minutes to the military. I just sent two phone cards (275 minutes). Thanks for posting this. I will buy a couple of more tomorrow and send them. I remember Christmas Eve of 1965, my first day in Korea. Pretty bleak. These guys have it 1000 times worse than I did. This is a great way to support our troops and not just talk about it. Hopefully we will have a great turnout of Proud Prowler owners sending phone cards. |

Count me in. I'm going to buy some phone cards and send them to Walter Reed. I'm also going to post some flyers at my office and fax some copies to my business associates. Not only does this support our troops, but it's a voluntary, grass roots, zero bureaucracy way to do it. |
