I'm moving to a new area in a couple of weeks and I think a portable GPS might help me get around better.I'm looking at a Garmin 2620, but am open to suggestions as to what might be better and where to shop. thanks

That sounds like a great idea. I think it would help a lot keeping your bearings in a new area.

butchee,

This is a good place to start.

I am also in search of a hand held GPS that will cover Southeast Asia. I have gone there on the average of 3-4 times a year. It would be nice to have one. Thanks for bringing this up, butchee.

I'm using the Garmin iQue.

I purchased the external antenna from Gilson as well as the car charger. It works great.

I have the Megallan Roadmate 500 and I like it alot. Here is a good site to read up on the different GPS units.

Something to think about when buying a GPS. The less expensive units do not have a lot of internal memory installed in the unit which will lead you to having to download the info (maps) to the unit when you need it. Depending on the internal memory you may get from 3-4 maps on up. Some of the newer models have a great deal of internal memory and the maps are already downloaded and installed in the unit so you can travel the whole country and not have to worry if you downloaded the right map or ran out of space on the internal/external memory card. I think the 2620 is one of the untis that have the higher internal memory, like the Magellan Roadmate700 which is a prime choice and runs around a grand. Just saw one go for $990 on Ebay.

Al - how far away you moving? It must be to another town/city if you need GPS to find your way around. Good luck with the move. Sounds like more roads to tame with your Prowler.

Thanks Marty--I'm heading to the Lake Ariel area of Pa. Right on Lake Wallenpaupack if anyone know's where that is.
It's a beautiful place , but not too close to a metropolitan area which can be good or bad depending on how you look at it. I think I'll welcome the change.

Al, you should have taken Richard's advice. We were in Dayton, OH on the way to Columbus and we needed to find a McDonald's so I could get breakfast. Richard punched it in and after about 5 minutes we were in an industrial area in front of McDonald's Tool and Die or McDonald's Paper Shredders.
And you know how hard it is to find a McDonald's along an expressway!!!!
And the legend is passed on to eternity on the internet. No need to thank me Richard.
