I just finished building a 768 square foot shop area at my home. I am interested in purchasing race deck tiles for my new shop and for my garage. The shop is 768 square feet and the garage is approximately 1000 square feet. I know that a good deal of the POA members have used these products and I was wondering if you had any input on the following issues: 1. Style - Diamond or Circle 2. Brand 3. Color 4. Durability 5. Distributor 6. Price 7. Installation tricks Some of you who may know me, understand that I am 116 years old and, therefore, any assistance that you could provide in the way of information would be appreciated. Thanks, The Old Man |

Hi, I was interested in putting down race deck in my garage until I saw the price. I don't remember exactly, but it was between $4 and $5 per square foot. I went to Lowe's and bought industrial vinyl self adhesive tiles for .99 a square foot. I put down a white and black checker pattern. I have plenty of extra tiles, so if I damage any, I can just pull up the old and put down the new. So far they are wearing great. my .02 Pantera |

Mr. Cat, One is only as old as one feels. Not even two hours ago I finished a mini marathon! I ran two feet, did 1/2 of 1 sit-up, and chased dew drop almost 5 feet! The young fresh things still find me to be a supple, tan, California beach bum with an incredible amount of stamina. I can't keep the beach bunnies away! I gotta run as my meds are starting to kick in and I just finished a bowl of steaming Campbell's Hungry Man Stew and now I am feeling pretty chipper. It is Saturday night and I'm thinking 'bout chasing some fresh stuff for a couple of hours before I "retire" for the night. Tomorrow, I gotta veg in front of the TV and watch the "foot-a-ball games and cheer my team to victory. They asked me to play but them youngins are a bit to fast for me. I wanted to get those tiles but they were too much $$. Go to Lowes and get Vinyl Composite tiles. They average $1 per black tile, and 2$ per white tile. They are score & snap and I laid down my 20 x 20 garage in 2 hours. The glue has a 24 hour working time as well... All in all an extremely easy job! |

The Old Man's garage is going to make ya'll jealous! I just sold him enough RaceDeck to turn his garage into a regular showroom. And although he tells me that only rich, old guys like him drive the Prowler, I still didn't scalp him on the product. Anyone trying to charge $5 a sq foot for RaceDeck is smoking something. I'll set up any of you Prowler folk in CA for $2.95 a sq foot delivered. Just give me a call: Erika at 801-367-9133. And don't worry -- I'm an authorized dealer of Snaplock. You can check out my site at www.garagestyle.com. And Scot, we all want to see your pictures posted when you get the garage done! Good luck! |

Notice the big blank white wall in front of the Prowler. I am still looking for something dramatic to hang there. Any ideas? I have seen the aluminum Prowler letters on Ebay and was thinking about that...But now I am waiting for the company I work for to get a new, much larger, waterjet so I can cut out a 4' long Prowler cat out of brushed stainless. We might have it by the end of the year |

Question for you guys with the composite tiles - how big a problem is "slipperiness" (is that a word?)when either the floor is wet or your feet are wet? I have been leaning towards the Race Deck stuff, but your floors look great and would be 1/3 the price, which in my case is a big deal as I have an 8 1/2 car garage. I like the look but I'd really prefer not to fall on my *** on a regular basis. |

Erika was great to work with. She gave me good advise and her communication was fantastic. I purchased 768 tiles from her and she delivered in just three days! The price that she offers is much better than any of the other vendors and she is located very close to the actual factory. I can't say enough good things about her service. It seems to me that after you take all things into account, the price of the Race Deck tiles are quite competitive with anything else on the market. I too considered the Lowe's method but after seeing them and thinking about the installation and the durability I realized that Race Deck was a better investment. Time and effort has to be a consideration and if you spend any time on her website it becomes apparent that the flexibility and durability of the product are two of its key functions. Just my thoughts.... The Old Man |

quote: That might very well be true. Yes, even at a great deal of $3.00 a foot, race deck tiles are 300% more expensive than the alternative. However, vinyl tiles do require gluing, which raises the cost even if you do it yourself. Also, from my understanding, race deck tiles just snap together, so it would take much less time to install. I think for the standard 2-car garage, at $3, the price of race deck tiles could be highly justified. At this point, you should only be conserned with the look. If you like race deck and it costs an extra $500 for the whole garage, that's a small price to pay for getting what you want. |

Orange I'm inclined to agree with you. By the time you factor in floor prep, troweling the adhesive (all of which is done on your knees on concrete which ain't no fun), and the time differential, the Race Deck pricing looks pretty darn good. My neighbor has it in his garage (it looks really nice under his $137,000 AMG Mercedes), and I gotta tell ya the stuff is, for all intents and purposes, indestructable. And the diamond plate pattern makes it far less slippery when wet. And it really is as easy to install as they suggest - I was over there the day the guy came to put it in and it comes in 2x2 foot squares (4 tiles) so you're actually installing it 4 square feet at a time (he did a two tone 2x2 foot checkerboard pattern) and he did it mostly standing up - you just toss the tiles on the floor. line 'em up, and snap 'em together by stomping on them gently with your foot. Hey Erika - I think I just became a sales rep for you without realizing it |

WOW! As a reseller, I thought I'd seen just about every kind of RaceDeck design. But, RBADKAT, your floor with the initials on it is incredible. Very cool! Have your started your installation yet, Scot? Hope it goes well. |

Pantera, nice garage. Did your floor have a crease (I'm talking about the intentional groove that the concrete man puts in so the floor won't crack) front to back and side to side? and what did you fill the crease with prior to putting down the tiles? Thanks Richard |

guys, The vinyl tiles I put down were self adhesive. Took me about 4 hours to do the whole thing. Very Easy!! Richard, There was no groove cut in my floor, but if there was I would have just tiled over it. If the gap is very wide you could use floor leveler, which is also sold at Lowes. For you guys with the snap together tiles, can you replace a single tile from the center of the garage without dismantling the whole thing? With the tiles I used I can just heat up a single tile with a heat gun, remove, and replace. I bought a couple extra boxes of tiles just incase... As far as prep, my floor was partially painted, the rest was uncoated concrete. I just swept the floor, then mopped it with my wifes floor cleaner, then waited an hour for it to dry. I was going for a 50's diner feel and I think the vinyl tile is perfect for that. I've got lots of diner and gas pump memorabilia that looks great with that floor. I don't think the diamond plate look would have been right for me. I think if your are going for a more racy or industrial look then the race deck is better This message has been edited by Pantera on 12-14-2004 at 10:18 AM |

Buk, The vinyl tile is deffinately more slippery than concrete or Race Deck, But its not so bad that I have ever fallen or am worried about falling. Another idea for you guys... My Pantera has a very small oil leak, which I did not want getting on my nice floor. I went to Lowes and got a clear plastic runner wich is made for going over hard wood floors. It about 24" wide and comes on a roll and they will cut it for you in any length. Very very cheap!! Cleans easy, stays in place, and is basically invisable under the car |

OK Boyz, The shop is just about done and now I am giving serious thought to installing my Race Deck tiles from Erika. I am planing on using a four square pattern alternating between light blue and white. Should be a nice effect. If any of youse boyz feel the need to participate feel free to mosey on over to San Diego and step to snapping these beauties together. I'll post pictures shortly, after the first of the year, when the floor is finished. I had a delay as the the two sliding glass doors (8068's) have been on back order! Never use Window Master products as they have more delays than a used car salesmen with a 300,000 mile car! The windows and the sliders were ordered on October 10th and so far the only thing that they have been fast about was cashing the check! Anyway, I'll keep you all posted. The Old Man |

Well Boyz, In short, it be happening! I have put down about 1/2 of the Racedeck tiles and it looks really good. Potato Latke (Lavka) offered to mosey over here and assist but I am gonna be out of town on Monday and Tuesday when he offered to help. That young wiper snapper could have put these things down in record time! They are really easy to do and, so far, they are working out quite well. I am limited in my ability to finish today as I needed some "internal plugs" for the 3/4" air lines in the floor in a couple of spots where I am not going to need air. I had some 3/4" plugs but they are too big for 3/4" PVC pipe. I guess I need 1/2" inch plugs rather than 3/4" ones so I'll have to pick them up tomorrow at the Home Depot. I am planning a center island work table and then cabinets all around the perimeters. The black pipe is a saw dust collection system and the white PVC is the air lines for the compressor. All in all, a 768 square foot shop and now I can one again have my garage back for cars. It should be nice once it is finished. The tiles are really good quality and locking system is positive and firm. It is simple to do as they are shipped in 4 square foot sheets so it is pretty simple to install it using the pattern that I have chosen. I'll post another picture when it is finished. Not bad for a 116 year old! Gotta run now as it is Christmas day and Dew Drop just ah finished fixing some special vittles for me and the reindeer. Afterwards, since it is warm out, I'll think I'll just sit on the front porch, in my tattered and torn underwear, sucking a Bud and watch the rich folk's parade by in their Ferraris and Lamborghini's.
