I love this post-it's like revisiting old memories all over again!
T-Bird-why the 80's?
What made it so special, more so than any other?
Just curious!

DR PROLWER,

I'm 35 yrs. old, in the 80's I was in my teens and of course there are always special memories during your teenage-years.
I certainly DO remember some of the 70's but I guess the 80's where just the decade ALL the 'unforgettable' stuff happened.

Have you ever seen the movie "Stand by me' where a writer remembers his 'youth' and writes about his teenage memories - great movie and I guess that's what I have been experiencing ever since that 80's radio station came on the air and brought back a bunch of old memories during that decade !

DUSTI.........The 80's were more of a blur for me. I was busy raising two sons (born 1970 and 1972), keeping up a house, yardwork (my husband traveled A LOT, so I basically did most everything), worked as a teachers aide in the elementary school system, drove 60 miles a night to get my son to gymnastics school, gymnastics meets every weekend. We moved to Colorado in 73, got transferred to Salt Lake City, back to Denver, back to Michigan, to Cincinnati (all husband's job) and finally in 92 back to Michigan again. Didn't have much time to watch t.v. or listen to the music (which I really didn't like anyway). Was just trying to keep family life put together. Most of the memories are not so much t.v., music, clothes, things like that. My life revolved around my husband, kids and home. Now it is my husband, my sons and my grandkids!!

I do still have my son's Atari game and all the games they had, all their Star Wars toys and games and the first mobile phone we had which was about the size of today's phone/answering machine units.

CJ,
you guys sure did a lot of moving - WOW !

Better hold on to those 'Star Wars' collectibles and Atari games - this stuff really gets hard to find and some of that 'original' Star wars collectible stuff is worth a little fortune today !

DUSTI.......yes, we did get moved a lot...almost as bad as being military. In almost 37 years of marriage, we have had to move 11 times and six of those were state-to-state moves!!! All but one of the state moves was job related. Bob started his career in Denver with AMC...we were bought by Renault......sold to Chrysler.......taken over by Daimler...and so far have survived all of them!

Believe me.............that was the reason I saved all the Star Wars stuff...

awesome - and by the way - Dallas airs every day on 'SoapNet' I know, I know - 'SoapNet'

Hey it's DALLAS baby

Things I learned from watching television in the 1980s:

The solution to the crime problem is somehow related to David Hasselhof and a sentient car with a "Cylon" eye in the grill.

People born and raised in Hazzard County are dumb: "What's Roscoe after us for this time?" Well, Bo and Luke, maybe it's because you're doing 110 mph in a 45 mph zone and Roscoe's a law enforcement officer.

If you stuff William Shatner into a cop uniform two sizes too small, women in their early 20s will swoon over him for some reason.

Millions of people will willingly watch Bronson Pinchot tell Mark Linn-Baker "Don't be ridiculous!" in a strange pseudo-European accent every week for years on end.

Based on the appearance of Night Court's Judge Harry T. Stone, I guess the average age for judges in New York is around 23.

Hey, do think on this exciting episode of America's Funniest Home Videos someone will get hit in the crotch?

In a lot of ways the 1980s were kind of the 1950s redux. Both decades had conservative presidents. The Cold War and the possibility of nuclear annihilation seemed to dominate both decades. The advent of music videos in the '80s sort of paralleled the advent of rock music in the '50s. Consumer capitalism formed the economic backdrop for both decades.

I know this is more perception than actuality, but there is a sense that if the 1980s didn't "repeat" the 1950s, then at least both decades did kind of "rhyme," if you know what I mean.

Thanks Doc !
You have NO idea what's just now happening - I'm sitting here and literally drooling on my keyboard while writing this reply ! That is unbelievable !! Your "Blondie" shocker a couple of weeks ago just digested - now all this ? I guess we are living in the wrong place (also called the "middle of nowhere")
Now THAT is a truly amazing line-up. The only 80's/70's artist we will see this year, that is coming even close to us is gonna be Styx in June in Chattannooga Tennessee but that's about it.
We would have to go to Atlanta, GA or Birmingham, AL and not even there it is certain those artists would perform.
Truly envy you having the chance to see them !

RSterling,
you coming to the Pigeon Forge 'gathering' first week of May ?
We're thinking of driving up there for a couple of days and meet some of the POA members.

I have no plans to come to the gathering to which you refer. Unfortunately, I'll be working.

Not to go off-topic, but I drove my Prowler out on the open road for the first time tonight. Drove great. Had a guy come up to me in the parking lot of a local restaurant and ask me about the thing. I don't know what turned more heads, the sight of the Prowler or the fact that after driving with the top down my hair looked like this:

That's exactly what my wife looks like as well (when she didn't use her hat !!)

So, how was your first 'big' drive ? Did you enjoy the ride, the feel of it ? Was it comfortable ?
Told you so, that you will be the topic of conversation at the gas station or anywhere you will stop - get used to it !

The Prowler drove great, but the ride is quite a bit more jarring than my Durango. (Heck, that molar was probably going to fall out of my mouth eventually anyway).

Getting back on topic, what about the bad aspects of the '80s?

New Coke. Hey, let's change the taste of Coke! For God sake, people, get out of the corporate board rooms and walk around in the daylight. What were you thinking?

Al Capone's Vault. Empty. There wasn't even a chair in there the camera man could throw at Geraldo's face.

The Ropers. Yeah, let's not pidgeonhole these characters in the dramatic straightjacket that was Three's Company. They needed their own show. Their's was such a rich story.

The TRS-80 Computer. One of the few computers Commodore VIC 20 owners were allowed to make fun of.

Chernobyl. Soviet nuclear reactor. There's a phrase that inspires confidence.

Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker. No comment here. This one's self-explanatory.

Random Forgotten 1980s Celebrity of the Day:

Captain Lou Albano

Maybe you remember him as Cyndi Lauper's father in her "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" and "She Bop" videos. Perhaps you recall him as the man at the forefront of the 1980s pro-wrestling craze. You may just recognize him as that strange, overweight guy with the rubber bands on his face.

Albano was one of the most controversial and hated wrestling managers in the history of the sport with a career going back to the late 1950s. He rose to national prominence in the 1980s by occupying that bizarre 1980s nexus between the theatrical schlock of pro-wrestling and the MTV-lead music video revolution.

The former manager of the WWF is also a cousin of Danny Devito.

1980s Shows That Time Forgot:

AUTOMAN

December 1983 - April 1984, ABC

Walter Nebicher (Dezi Arnaz, Jr.) is the police department's resident computer expert, although his immediate superior gives no respect as to his contribution to the force. To fix that, he creates a special program that creates Automan (Chuck Wagner), an artificially intelligent computer construct that looks real, sounds reals and, given enough power, can have an actual physical presence outside the computer that feels real. Together, Walter and Automan along with Cursor, a small floating droid that can create any object Automan needs, battle the criminal elements of the city.

In the early 1980s, computers had begun moving out of the data labs of industry and academia, but had yet to transition to the Internet-connected household appliances that they would become in the 1990s. Enter Glen A. Larson, creator of 100,000 television shows, all of which have some combination of about 4 or 5 different character types and maybe 3 different storylines.

Focusing on the "pre-teen boys who won't recognize one-dimensional characters and hack writing if you throw in some cool (by '83-'84 standards) visual effects" demographic -- of which I was a loyal member -- Larson brought this now-forgotten example of the virtual-reality subgenre, the granddaddy of movies like The Lawnmower Man and Virtuosity, to the small screen.

Except for the memorable gimmick of having Automan's angular car make turns by abruptly "jumping" to a perpendicular position, resulting in Dezi Arnaz, Jr.'s face being plastered against the passenger side window, this rarely seen TV show has been discarded like an old '80s vintage Trapper Keeper.

AUTOMAN ??

How in the world did you remember THAT ?? No, serious - HOW in Pete's sake did you remember that show ?

UNBELIEVABLE this guy ?

(Remindes me of "THRON" - that revolutionary, computer generated movie that blew my mind as a minor !)
