Here it is Sunday morning and I'm still grinning... I participated in the 2nd Road Race of the season at No Problem Raceway on Saturday, March 22nd. I'm just a rookie and this was my first time running through the whole race format. I only completed one lap of the feature due to some over heating. I ran the 78 Vette in the Vintage V8 class and the car handled very well.

Some of you may remember what this car looked liked when we started this project:

Johnny Walter had the fastest lap of the day in his GT1 Vette running 1:19 min and he won the Super Production class (His 2nd consecutive 1st place). He lapped the field and was cruising toward the end trying to let the 2nd place car catch up (a Porsche). In the Heat race, I ran several 1:35 laps (which was very good for me on street tires). The other Super Production cars (other than Johnny and the Porsche) were running 1:28 to 1:29.

We had around 40 race cars out for the 2nd race. There are eight (8) classes that run in four (4) race groups. The groups are 1) Formula 2) Red and Yellow Bracket 3) Blue and Green Bracket & Spec Miata 4) Super Production and Vintage V8. Each group runs separate:
10 min Warm-up session
15 min Qualifying
15 min Heat Race
20 min Feature

We had four Vettes in the Super Production and Vintage V8 class along with a 427 Cobra, Porsche, Plymouth Duster and couple other brands. In the Heat Race and Feature the cars are staged based on their qualifying times and the pace car leads you around the track in two rows side by side for the start (just like you see on TV)... The timing system is electronic with transponders in each car.

It's amazing the number of perfect strangers who will come up to just talk or offer to help if you are having problems. I've become friends with the other drivers in the Vintage and other classes and everyone is willing to offer tips (mechanical and driving) to help each other. It's quite an experience. While there's a lot of competitive spirit, there doesn't seem to be a lot of egos...
