I am attempting to see if there is a regional difference in this term. I am referring to working a shift, i.e. at a factory. What hours would the swing shift be, in your area? This is a serious question, really.

Ed I found this on the Washington U site. (NW wash) The Swing Shift Permit is designed to assist permit holders whose shifts start after 2:30 p.m. Swing Shift permits may be purchased for parking areas C12, E2, E12, and W2. The permit is valid weekdays from 2:30 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. and on Saturdays until noon and may be purchased on a quarterly or annual basis.found this too: The American HeritageŽ Dictionary of the English Language: Fourth Edition. 2000. swing shift NOUN: The work shift between the day and the night shifts, usually 4 p.m. to midnight. the second is the one I would have thought to be the norm. In Nebraska, it was 3-11 or 4-12. In Arizona, it is 11-8 or 12-9.Why do you ask??? You sleep during all swing shifts, lol.

Ed - I was always under the impression that the term "swing shift" applied to people that worked hours that overlapped the standard shift hours. If a GE plant or Ford Assembly Plant normal shifts were 7 AM to 3:30 PM and 3:30 PM to 12 midnight, the swing shift may be something like 12 noon to 8:30 PM - perhaps for maintanance workers.

Maintenance personnel in many facilities start at 1 hour past production shift changes to ensure the continuity of repair projects. This also allows tool changes, and Preventive Maintenance activities to happen during non-productive time periods. Neal

Thanks folks. I appreciate the feedback. I figured 3 P til 11 P but Sandy thought it was overlap like 2 til 10 or 4 til midnight. AC, it is top secret and besides that, pretty boring. The outcome could get interesting and if it does, I will email you the results.
