CJ,
Nice looking Scrambler! Is the motor AMC? If so who built it and what are the specs? My brother has a 69 AMX that he has owned since 1972 and is wanting to get a motor built. Thanks

BluBYU,

Using a 1970 390 AMC engine. The '70 was best, taller deck plus 1/2" head bolts versus 7/16" in '69. The block was fully machined, bored +.040" and an internal oil line was added in the cam valley to feed both ends of the block. Traco discovered that number 7 and 8 rod bearings suffered a loss of pressure above 7,000 rpm while doing development work for Penske for TransAm racing years ago. It will have all modern parts including the new Indy Cylinder Heads aluminum AMC street heads.

The engine is being built by Norm Brandes of Westech Automotive in Wisconsin. His number is 262-889-4346. Norm is working with Marlan Davis, the Tech Editor for Hot Rod Magazine. The basis of the story is to take an old, over-looked engine, add modern components and make big power on pump gas in a combination that anyone could duplicate. Norm's target is 550 hp and 550 #/ft of torque. Not bad from 400 CID if he makes it. The engine goes to an engine dyno and the numbers will tell the story. Norm took this photo and others elsewhere on the site at the old AMC Proving Grounds for possible use in the article.

I've been involved with Norm for a long time and he has done a number of engines for my work projects, GM and friends, some of which are POA members. I highly recommend him.

I should mention that Norm is working on a number of modifications to the 3.5 V-6 Prowler engine. He has the benefit of virtually all of the development work that has been done on the engine to date and access to inside information from DC's engine plants. He is focusing on maximizing the output of the basic engine and to making it live with supercharger and or nitrous. I may be a little premature, but he will have the basic engine combination to use for Prowler projects.
