Norm I heard the one guy say that a Prowler might be worth 50-55K in 15 years. I didn't care too much for the commentators. It seems they were vying for who was the best informed and IMHO, none of them had much going on. They wrongly identified some cars, engines and history of both.
They thought who they was

BJ UPDATE:

Don Johnson's Cuda convert went for $137,500 today.
Wildcat - hope you enjoy the boat this summer Sorry, I couldn't help myself. Still going to kick your butt for selling yours

The overflow, unsold B/J cars ended up at the Pavilions car show today,,,,,,,over 1,000 show cars parked,,,,,another 2,000 cars driving through looking for a spot to park and show. Probably over 15,000 spectors. What a ZOO. Took me 30 minutes to go 75 feet when leaving the show tonite. Think they needed some traffic control?

The Scottsdale airport was loaded with corporate style Lear Jets. I believe the bidders were people who could afford whatever they wanted to pay. Like I always tell you folks,,,,,,,a car is worth what it will bring in CASH,,,,,,TODAY.

This article was on our mercedes list and we thought it was well written and tells the whole story of the auction from his point of view.

I started watching the Barrett-Jackson auction last night and was hooked.
It's been a blast to watch all this amazing iron cross the block. Last night
the hosts were discussing the value of a car's provenance i.e. Whether
celebrity ownership added XX $$ to even a particularly unremarkable car.
This of course, was while Reggie Jackson was unloading about a dozen of his
collectibles. (FYI, I spent a day with Reggie about a dozen years ago while
doing an article at MuscleCars magazine, and he is the real deal. He knows
his cars and is not some celebrity diletante {sp?}.) Anyway, it seemed that
his cars were going for maybe 5-10% higher than a "non-Reggie" car should
sell for, although there was one or two that didn't make his reserve price.
My take on it, at the time, was the buyers could say that it was an
ex-Reggie Jackson car, and also be assured that the car had had top-notch
maintenance while in Reggie's care, which for 5% more, is not a bad price to
pay for that kind of added value.

Then today, Don Johnson unloads of few of his rides. First up was the yellow
Hemi 'Cuda convertible he drove on Nash Bridges. Except that the car wasn't
a Hemi "Cuda at all. It wasn't even a replica, except for the badging. They
did not even mention the actual motor, and they didn't lift the hood, but I
can't imagine there's be a hemi motor under there without them wanting to
show it off. (For those of you don't have a scorebook, there were exactly 14
Hemi-Cuda convertibles produced. One of those are probably worth somewhere
north of $150K). So basically, the car could've had a 318 - hell it could
have a slant six!- or a wedge motor, whatever. (Having just looked on the
B-J website, I see it's a 440 Wedge) The car, while certainly beautifully
restored, is a best a $30K car. And what does this celebrity provenance add
to the value of the car? About $100,000! What idiot paid $130K for that
car?! Amazing. Well, it was fun to watch though.

It does seem, however, the top of the market is fading, though. This year,
top price for a 65 GT40 Mk1 was about $320K. Last year a similar car went
for $430K, so al you folks hanging onto those 240Ds, you might want to sit
tight until the market comes back. ;-) The rest of the high end was
comprised of Cobras & Ferraris. The impressive prices I saw were being paid
for 60s vintage American muscle- Vettes, Shelby Mustangs, Camaros and
Chevelles etc were all above $75K, some close to $150K! Albeit, these were
the cream of the crop in the genre- ZL1's, LS6s, GT350 and 500s, but their
values seemed to have gone up about 50-100% in the past few years.

Unfortunately, I didn't see any MBs go across the block, so I can't get a
feel for whether I should just keep putting miles on the 400E. ;-)

They'll be re-capping the auction on Speed Channel in early March. If you
like this sort of stuff (watching rich car nuts getting to buy the cars of
yours and my dreams) I recommend the show.

Norm, you must have blinked. They did give a couple of a second shot of the D.J.powerplant. The distributer was in the front, so it was a b-block....383-440. he was obviously pleased with the sale price. Not one mention or even recognition of Cheech Marin with him. Cheech&Chong.
It was a nice show. I wonder if the upcoming Fla auction will be televised.

On the Don Johnson car it was sold as a 70 Barrracuda Convert, and that is what it was it still had the Barracuda badges on the dash, had the basic gauge package and they bolted a tack in, put 71 tail lights, front fenders and grill in. This thing was not even a good fake, when it came up on the block I thought because it was a TV show car it might bring $50K but never over a hundred. Then when Reggie brought up the old Ford coupe on friday he was selling for charity with the 427 SOC motor and it only brought I think $38 to $42 that car was a deal. And last night the Yankees Dragster for charity only brought $40 what a slap in the face, the car did not run but in pieces that thing is worth $60. OH well maybe we need a POA event next year when this thing is going on.

the `70 / `71 Cuda they had on B-J that Don Johnson drove was a `Cuda. In 70 all of them had barracuda spelled out on the dash. This car was a 440 car from the factory. They had 4 cars done to make the show. One 318, one 340, this 440 and the othere I'm not sure of but maybe another 318 car.

The 340 & 440 were `Cuda's the others clones. They did open the hood last night and it was a BIG BLOCK Shaker Hood car but not a Hemi. They need better people to talk about the cars or at least some of the american muscle, I think I know more about them then tha guy's they used.

As far as price. `Cuda convertibles, whether a slant 6 or monster V8 are very collectable. The price they said the car was worth about $30,000 if it had not been on TV, IMO if the car was as nice as it looked would bring 40~50K on Ebay without the TV star label. Had it been a real `71 HEMI `Cuda it would have been in the higher 6 digits. In the latest Mopar Collectors Guide there is a story about a factory `70 HEMI `Cuda in need of restoration that sold for $460,000, this was a cheapie Cuda dog dish hubcaps and all maybe $5,000 new in 70

as Bob pointed out the car had the standard gauges, I seen the tach but didn't notice what gauges where behind it. the rally gauge package was an option it didn't come standard on the muscle cars. I have seen several AAR's & TA challengers with the same stock guages, someone didn't check off rally dash on the order form.

If I remember correctly the 340 car was a `71. two other cars from Nash Bridges sold on Ebay last year and if memory serves me correctly one sold for $75,000 and the other for $85,000. Both went to collectors that plan on installing the hemi to make them Hemi Clone `Cuda Convertibles. So for them to say Don's car was only worth 30K they didn't know what they were talking about.

old Reggie Jackson didn't have much luck selling his cars, a `69 COPO ZL 1 Camaro with bid of 285,000 and he was holding out for 330,000 and what is a COPO nothing more than a `69 Camaro with an all aluminum 427. a $7,000 car in it's day

there is a BIG difference in a COPO 427 Camaro and a ZL1 427 COPO car, seem the aluminum 427 there were only 69 made and the motor option was something like $4,100 on top of the price of the car

If you want to ride in the boat better not hold your breath, I doubt I take it out this summer either

here is link to a `70 convertible `Cuda

I thought I heard them say that COPO Camaro was one of only 5??

Also the original block came withthe car but was not in it. So the big deal about the COPO is the name, history, and most importantly....engine? i think it was devalued greatly not having the original block in it....

The ZL1 427 ci cars would sold to drag racing teams back in 1969, after a couple of years of racing the aluminum motors the block would be set a side for a more dependable cast iron block, if luck would have it, the aluminum block would be set a side and sold to another drag team when the car might be sold. Reggie's car had the original block, might of had a rod break and destroying the block. Only 6 of the ZL1 still have the original blocks in them and run. Hundreds of COPO Camaro with the 427 Cast iron blocks would made, but only 69 with the ZL1
