I figure I have my father to thank/blame for my obsession with automobiles...my first word was Ford......when I was a little kid, I had lots of toy cars, race tracks, models etc etc...my dad was always trading cars(traded 3 times in one day once) and we had quite a few nice ones, although he was a Ford man....he had lots of late 50's and 60's Ford convertables, even had two just alike one time(I have since done that a few times too)....he would always spin the tires when I was a kid,and squeal the tires rounding corners, just to give me a thrill....always played the radio loud, had his arm out the window, he showed me how to make your shirt sleeve snap in the breeze to look cool......he let me sit on his lap and steer before I was big enough to reach the pedals.....he let me drive by myself when I was about 12 years old....I drove us home from work a lot of nights.....he taught me how to drive a stick, lots of lessons holding a car on a hill with the clutch(he didn't think brakelights were cool)......he helped me get my first car, and went with me to help order my first new car, a '68 GTO conv......a couple of years later I had a '69 Chevelle destroyed in an accident....he took me to the local Ford dealer and tried to get me to buy this funny looking Mustang...it was a BOSS 429...being a dummy, I had no interest in this car(really didn't know what it was then)...we raced each other a bunch when I was a teenager...I usually had a faster car, but he was hard to beat thru the gears.....his love of automobiles has continued thru the years....when he was in his mid 70's he used to drive my '69 Dodge Daytona 440 SIX-PAK several times a year, said it was the "neatest car he ever drove"....last summer I took him back to his home in Kentucky(he can't drive anymore), and I asked him what he wanted to go in...I have various types of cars my self plus own some auto rental agencies, so what ever type he would be comfortable in we would take....he is 80 years old and asked "well, can we take a Viper ??" I said sure, so we packed, took off down the interstate and he smiled solid for four hours...he can hardly see, but could "feel the V10 in the seat of his pants" he said....kept asking for more speed....we had several spurts at over 140 mph and he just kept wanting more.....more recently I have been taking him to all the heart doctors old people have to go to....we usually take a Prowler, it is very difficult for him to get in and out of, but he enjoys EVERY outing, he never complains about the bumpy ride, lack of space, hitting his head getting in and out, just gets in, sits back and smiles......I am trying to return the same thrills he gave me as a kid.....he is anxiously awaiting spring time so we can go Prowling again with "that top off"............

When I was 16 I worked for a guy that owned a set of timing lights, Christmas Tree and PA system that we would set up at local Drag Strips on Sundays, sometimes Saturday and Sunday, This was in the early 60's. After we set up the systems, always started about daylight, we would have nothing to do until time trials. I would then help with car classification as the cars would arrive at the strip. I really enjoyed seeing all the different cars with the different mods. When the time trials started then the real work would start. I made just enough money to buy a 1958 Studebaker Champion with a flat head 6 cyl engine(wish I had it now), I never was able to build it up the way I wished I could have, because I was always spending what money I had to just keep the darn thing running and buy enough gas (29.9/gal)and have $5.00 to take a girl out to the Drive-In Movies on Friday night and get us a McDonald's burger and fries plus a coke (total .35 cents total for each of us). I guess I'm still trying to live those days by being in love with Fast Cars still today.PROWL ON..............Kelley

Is there an echo in here????Probably my godfather who traded cars like underwear. Every 6 months to a year he had a new t-bird or vette. There were 3 of us little boys who would occupy the one passenger seat (what was a seatbelt??) and go for a joy ride. In those days he was pretty well connected and would take us all to see the Colt 45's (pre-Astro's) play ball. He introduced my hero Willie Mays to me one time. I will never forget shaking his hand. Another would be a doctor neighbor that liked cars. He had a hopped up Pantera.

Nice story Larry, but you like any reason to see triple digits...LOLThere is more than one person that is responsible for my car crazy. The 1st is my Dad too, he was always working on cars at my uncles body shop (guy #2) he too would do spins on the ice & snow. Having 4 kids he never had really cool cars but had some that were nice. 54 Ford 2 door wagon, 64 Polara 2 door hardtop, 68 Impala convertible, but he was never into Hot Rods thought it was a waste of money to go out and try to break a car RACING. Even though dad didn't want my brother or me to have a FAST car we ended up with them anyway and DIDN'T get killed. Just like LB. I was able to steer when I was really little (at 6 had his 56 chevy rolling out the drive when I got it out of gear PLAYING and my big brother and dad running out to stop the car before it run into the ditch) at 11 I was driving the country roads with him. At 14 dad took me to a car dealership and showed me a `67 Barracuda that he was planning on buying. He said if I would keep it clean and take care of it when I turned 16 he would sell it to me. But my sister wanted it and she was older so even my begging didn't get me the car after I kept it clean. It was a very nice car but a slant 6 PS and AC so good thing Cindy got it instead of me. My 1st car was a `67 Barracuda 273 AT, and by the way my other sister had a `67 Barracuda Formula S 273 HIPO. 3 Barracuda's in the drive at one time. I ended up with the HIPO in mine plus the 8 3/4 rearend from the formula before dad would let her sell it...HEHEHE...Now my uncle Mayburn had the body shop and he liked FAST cars and always had cars for sale. My favorite car he had was a `67 dark blue 440 AT Plymouth GTX. He never kept a car over a few months. some of the cars he had for sale at the shop that I remember was a 66 Mustang GT, 65 Coronet 426 wedge and a mint green `59 cadillac Coupe deVille not a hot rod but damn was it ugly (I would love to have it now) My BIG brother, now dad said no to fast cars. At 14 my brother bought a `69 Dodge Dart GTS 383 AT that was VERY QUICK. He told me he would sell it to me (couldn't get the Barracuda dad promised)when I got my license but dad said no I would get KILLED. Tony did let me drive it ALOT, Tony also bought the `59 Caddy from uncle. Last but not least is Jerry Horsley, the coolest guy on our street. He moved into the neighborhood in `67 and at the time seemed like an old guy, (I was 9) he always had cool stuff. In `71 he bought a `67 GTO show car. It was delivered on a rainy day on a trailer. I was out riding my motorcycle and had to go see it. I was in LOVE. I didn't know what I was looking at. I had never seen anything like it before, WAS IT A RACE CAR? I didn't know but I sure liked it. Jerry still lives down the street from me (I built house next door to Mom & Dad's)and doesn't seem that old. He has over 15 rally COOL cars including the `67 GTO which I know now is the GOLDEN GOAT, ISCA NATIONAL CHAMP in `73 & `80. I still love this car but do not have the 30K he wants for it. The reason I wanted to show the Prowler was Jerry. My Dad also still likes going for rides in Fast cars even though he didn't want us to have them. I let him drive my `71 Cuda and when he got back he said it would jump from 70 to 100 in the snap of a finger, my `72 Challenger 340 4 speed he took a picture of the day I drove it home, 1st and last time he did this, and yes he likes to tell people how quick the prowler is even though he will not drive it, only has riden in it, (I think he is afraid he might hurt it) There is more than one that had the influence on me but DAD is the one that really got it started and was always there to help when I did break something and couldn't fix myself. He carries a picture of the Prowler and tells everyone about it and has to show it off to anyone that comes over to his house. I think he is as proud of it as I am, but they thought I was CRAZY when I let a $1,000 deposit on it in `96 not knowing when it would come in and how much it would cost.

Let's see....I'd have to blame Burt Reynolds in Smokie and the Bandit... Also, David Hasselhoff in Knight Rider... Don Johnson in Miami Vice... Tom Selleck in Magnum PI... All these shows were on when I was growing up, centered around hot cars... I'm not partial to any one make... First hot rod for me was a bright red '92 Firebird (I couldn't afford the lamborgini or the ferrari -lol)... then came the '96 ford mustang... Now it's the Prowler and the Lightning!!

I'd have to blame my older brother. Being seven years older, he was into cars so naturally I became interested in them and going fast as well. My brothers 1954 Ford Skyliner (glass roof), was the first car inwhich I got to go 100 mph in, and I was hooked right then! Thanks BroThis message has been edited by ALLEY CAT on 01-19-2003 at 03:06 PM

I blame my Dad and Grandfather. I was brought up in a family owned business of Goodyear tires and Auto service. My Grandfather owned a Sinclair gas station in the late teens, which evolved into a independent Goodyear dealer for over 50 years. Cars have always been in my blood. Thanks Dad !

When I was a kid Kenny Hirata of Hirata & Hobbs a gas dragster builder lived two blocks from me. I got to hang with Don Garlits, the Hawaiian, Don Purdome and others. They would take me to the races every weekend, not bad for a kid in fifth grade. I spent every free moment sweeping the shop and running errands for them. I was one lucky kid. This message has been edited by Neal & Mary Ann Bardens on 01-19-2003 at 08:50 PM

Suzanne Sommers in American Grafitti is to blame!Actually - I had six male first cousins that were 3 to 10 years older than me. Both of my uncles were in the car business and they all had strret rods, vettes, MG's, Nomads, T-birds, and on and on.... I figured they all dated pretty good looking girls and knowing them like I did as cousins figured it must be the cars that attracted the girls. ------------------ 2000 Black with hand painted blue faded to purple flames

When I was young, I had a cousin that I ran around with. He was Mopar crazy at that time. I picked it up from him. We did everything together as kids and the car thing just became part of the routine. He and I are still close, but he has become a Ford guy now.------------------

Probably the same for me. I fell in love with the Lamborghini Countach. I WILL own a Lamborghini one day! I'll park it next to my Kat.
