This post is not an attempt to get a T-shirt! I will give it away to the next person to join (# 2842) as a welcome wagon gift if I do win.
I am going to start a thread and tell you something about Ohio, not because I want to talk about Ohio, but rather so everyone else will post a similar diatribe about their home state so that I can learn something about the other states. I have been in 51 states if you count confusion but I would like to know a lot more. It is cold and boring here in Ohio so this is a good time to start this thread.
When you think of Indiana you probably think of the Indy 500 and when you think of Kentucky you probably think of the KY Derby and bluegrass and horses. When you think of Ohio you probably don't even think.
Ohio is celebrating its 200th birthday this year.
Ohio has furnished 8 US Presidents, 4 of whom died in office. Two were assassinated and Wm. Henry Harrison caught pnuemonia after giving the longest inaugural speech in history and died within a few weeks. orville and Wilbur Wright lived in Dayton and had a bicycle shop and then invented manned flight. 24 astronauts from Ohio followed their path.
Sports: The REDS were the first professional baseball team and were known as the Big Red Machine in the mid 70's. Oscar Robertson played basketball at Univ. of Cincinnati. U.C. won the NCAA Championship back to back in the early 60's. The Big O averaged triple doubles for an entire year. Now it is a big deal when a player does it once. Jack Nicklaus is from Columbus, OH. Jesse Owens attended Ohio State, Ohio State is the current national football champions. Sandy Koufax played baseball & basketball at UC and later did fairly well as a pitcher.
The first CONCRETE paved road in America was near Bellefontaine, in 1891.
A few famous people born in OH. Pete Rose, Ken Griffey Jr., Barry Larkin, Leonard Slye(later known as Roy Rogers), Doris Day, Mike Schmidt, Dean Martin and Mike & Judy Krehel.
Andy Williams lived in Cincinnati for awhile. Rod Serling of the Twilight Zone lived here, Ted Turner and sad to say Donald Trump for a short while. Dr. Sabin who invented the oral polio vaccine did it while at Cincy General Hospital. Powell Crosley who mass produced cheap radios for the masses was from Cincy. He also produced the Crosley automobile, the Crosley refrigerator and the Shelvidore refrig. and Crosley Field was named after him. He owned WLW radio station, which was heard in about 30 states.
A Buckeye is a type of tree that has a nut on it that is about twice as big as an acorn. It is very dark brown and shiny.
The local food that is unique is Skyline Chili. It is very thin and not like any other type of chili. It is a Greek import and has been here for just over 50 years. There is probably at least 50 Skyline Chili parlors here. We also have the Maisonette Rest. which has been a Mobil 5 Star for over 40 years, the longest run in the country. Montgomery Ribs are also fairly famous. Bob Hope has them shipped to Cal. on a very regular basis. I think Bob Hope lived near Youngstown although he was born in England.
Proctor and Gamble was started here and is still here. Ivory soap was produced by accident when someone left the mixer run too long and whipped in too much air and they discovered that that made it float. Seriously.
Wright (Bros) had a plant just north of town making airplane parts. It is now G.E. Aircraft Engine plant. They make most of the huge jet engines for the entire world.
That is more than enough about Ohio. I seriously would like to hear something about your state. When I think of LA. I think of cajun food and zydeco music and New Orleans. I don't have a picture of anything in Mississippi so educate me and the others who are interested.
Sorry this is so long.

OK Ed, I'll play...

Born & raised in NJ...the Cancer State, The Tollbooth State, The home of the Hoagie Queen. Nothing good at all to say about NJ, as I have lived in North and South jersey many times over...(I have moved 23 times in my 38 years on this planet). The only good thing I can say about NJ is they have great corn and tomatoes.....ummm.....That's about it.

Moved to southern MD 6 years ago with my job. Things are slower here (which I like), and the people in general are nicer. Not much in stores, but that's what the internet is for. I have enjoyed myself much more in the last 6 years than in a 5 lifetimes in New Joisey!

Southern MD;

Famous for:
water on 3 sides.
Stuffed Ham (ham cooked with cabbage and cale and spices)
crabs
drive thru liquor stores
Huge beautiful Navy base...I mean BEAUTIFUL! Like a resort.
Finding my current (and final) wife.

BT, I would have to say that Atlantic City is one of the worst spots in America, BUT about 50 miles south, it is beautiful. Cape May is REALLY nice. I do not know much about NJ, except it is the butt of a lot of jokes from NYers. I have landed at the airport in Newark a few times. I am sure there are other nice spots in NJ.
Judy, I knew a lot more to print but I thought that post was way too long already.
I really hope some more people take part in this so we can learn some things that we never knew.

Ed:

I was in AC 2 years ago and was shocked at how much it improved.....I remember it from the old days (1980's) and it looked so scummy as in the movie "Atlantic City"....But it still is scary 2 blocks in or after 10:00 PM....

Funny trivia....Atlantic City was voted BEST DRINKING WATER IN ALL THE UNITED STATES! ...and if you drink the water there, you would agree......very strange fact!

Just 5 miles south of AC is Longport with beautiful white sand beach. Wildwood beach is nearing 3/4 mile wide at some points and grows every year! Imagine July, hot, and the sand burns your feet, but it takes you literally 20 minutes to walk to the water's edge!

I don't know or remember alot about the entire state of Indiana historically(read Hot Rod in school), but I will fill you in on our local area....New Castle is a town of about 20,000 people....has had a Chrysler plant here since it was Maxwell, was built in 1906-7 range....Chrysler has always been the main employer in the city boasting 5-6000 workers at peak to the current 1,000 or so(everybody is related to somebody that worked there at one time or another)...the plant is being purchased by Metaldyne at this point in time and the entire face of the area will change in the next few years....due to the many auto plants in this part of Indiana, there have always been plenty of good paying jobs, thus plenty of interest in toys....this town had the typical cruise strip till just a few years ago, and in the 60's it was bumper to bumper for miles in every town around, every night, and especially weekends....always were more MOPAR muscle cars here per capita then any city I ever knew....even today, there are approx 15 Prowlers and nearly a dozen Vipers in this town....any rare car, especially MOPARs, was here in abundance...at one time there were 7 of the 1969 Dodge Daytonas(2 HEMIs) here in NC and I owned the first one ever shipped in the USA....historically, Wilbur and Orville Wright did something at the edge of town here also, one was born here or something like that...there is a large memorial park here for them....basketball, another Hoosier obsession, is deeply rooted in this town....the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame is located here in NC....the sight was chosen I suspect due to the fact the largest highschool fieldhouse in the world is also in this town...our highschool was named Walter P. Chrysler High until just a few years ago....always a heavy auto influence in this part of the state, and when the snow flew and the hot cars were stored away for the winter, basketball was the main entertainment....that has also been changed in the last few years...in an effort to make everyone feel good and be a winner, a new class system was adopted for highschool basketball which has decimated interest and attendance in the sport.....winters can be difficult or not too bad at all...every year is different...my Kat is sitting by the curb right now with ice/snow/saltspray and sand stuck all over it.....there are all sorts of small race tracks(car and horse) dotting the area, lots of dragstrips, used to be several figure 8 tracks, but many of these small tracks have suffered in attendance the last few years also....don't know of anything really important that ever happened here....Hoosier Cabinets were made here in town for many years, today they are highly sought after antiques....home of the Maxwell automobile, and I think the Jesse French Piano co.....Pres. Ronald Reagan visited town for a few minutes one time....we have had several local girls appear in Playboy thru the years....Harry Anderson(Night Court) used to hang out in town a few years ago...heard it was one of the Playmates he was courting.....Muncie Indiana, about 15 minutes from here was where aliens landed in "Close Encounters of a Third Kind".....the Indy 500 is the big thing in the spring and the Brickyard 400 in the summer....I have a store just a couple blocks from the track and you can feel the buzz there during those times of the year.....New Castle, just typical small town America...have lived in other states and countries, but have always returned to New Castle.....no place like home I guess....

Tangled, Thanks for the post. I never knew the Maxwell was built there. My sister had a Hoosier Cabinet but just built a new home and I did not see the cabinet. hmmm.
I really like Harry Anderson. He seems like a very interesting guy, totally unlike most "movie Stars" or TV stars. He was into magic. I loved Night Court, too. Some zany characters, for sure. Bull was hilarious.
Muncie furnished Ron Bonham to the Univ of Cincy back in their heyday. I saw him a few years later in Fla. and he was with someone that should have been in Playboy. I was told he did not work, his mom was still supporting him. He had to be almost 30 by then.
What is your version of the origination of HOOSIER? I know there are several versions and no one seems to know for sure.

Ed....
Ron Bonham and his wife J.J. were good customers and friends of mine from the late 70's till the late 80's....they were in charge of the Muncie reservoir, park, beaches, boat storage etc etc...one of my favorite calls every week was at the beach to get an order from his wife(always had on a bikini) ....she would have put the average Bunny to shame...very nice people...I also dealt with her family in a small business near Muncie...today they are still involved with the reservoir and Ron runs for local political posts ...haven't seen them in ten years or so....if I remember right, he also played for the Celtics ....New Castle supplied Kent Benson(mid 70's) to I.U and the Milwaukee Bucks I think, and the biggest star from NC probably was Steve Alford....I.U. star, olympic athlete and I think is the coach at Iowa these days....sports is not one of my strong points, never have paid much attention to them ....interesting note....when S. Alford graduated from high school he worked at a local bank for part of the summer opening checking accounts...my wife was his boss so to speak...he was really there as a goodwill type thing...meet and greet the kids....Hoosiers, don't remember much about it except alot of the extras in the movie are friends of mine....was done with local people....if I remember correctly the movie Hoosiers was supposed to be based on the 1954 state basketball champs, Milan Indiana....alot of the movie was filmed at the Knightstown school(10 miles from here)....it is still there and VERY old....the church used in the movie was burned to the ground 8-10 years ago by vandals ......all the trivia that comes to mind at the moment....my old brain needs to relax......

Ed....
I just reread your post and saw The Big O's name there...missed it the first time....flashback to the 1969-1971 era...I worked as a computer programmer/geek at an insurance company in Indy at 39th and Meridian...across the street from our office was a small park and a court...nearly every day us GEEKS went across the street and KICKED A$$ against the local youth(mostly they kicked ours)....one day we are there shooting hoops and there was a small game starting at the other end of the court, my buddy was from Indy and he recognized The Big O...we all shot around a little after they finished their game....I wasn't impressed, I mean, after all he was no Garlits or Petty...I really didn't even know who he was till my buddy filled me in....think Big O went to Shortridge High school, which was only a few blocks from where I worked....I am not sure if he was playing pro at the time or retired....think he was a star in the late 50's in Indy.....again, my sports knoweledge is VERY limited....

Tangled, I meant the nickname Hoosier, as in Indiana Hoosier and not the movie. We go eat at the Railroad Inn in Milan a couple of times a year. They have all the memorabilia from the movie and the original letter jackets, etc. from 1954. They have a killer salad bar and great bread pudding. I like the movie so your post was not in vain. I like Gene Hackman ever since French Connection.
The big O still lives in Cincy and is pretty standoffish. He goes to all the UC games. He owns 3 or 4 businesses including a construction business. He graduated UC in 1961 or 1960, I think. I thought he went to Crispus A. High School, but that may not be correct. He was every bit as good as Michael Jordan. I follow I.U. basketball some. I have a good friend that goes to several games a year in Bloomington and one of my nieces went to IU. I wish IU, UC, UK, Louisville, XU, Miami, Dayton all played each other every year or formed their own conference. You talk about rivalries and crowds. You would have a tough time getting a ticket.
When the Final Four was in Indy the first time we had tickets. I haven't gone to the tourney the past few years.
Another thing to see in Indiana is Notre Dame. I have only been to one football game there but it is a sight to see. Another highlight is the Auburn Museum in Auburn featuring Cord, Duesenburgs and Auburns. AWESOME.
Okay, somebody, give us another state.
I just looked at the map. I did not know exactly where you were located. Do you ever eat at Wolliver's in Hagerstown? We have eaten there a few times. Now that is a buffet!!

Crispus Attucks sounds correct...had forgotten all about that one....always got those two schools confused...they were "very similar' to each other during those times....

more useless trivia....I met Bobby Plump(Milan) a few years ago at a local NC bookstore...he was promoting a book he had written, bought a copy for my son for XMas(he is the sports fanatic in the family)....Bobby and I talked for nearly an hour(only customer in the store)he was more interested in the Viper I was driving than in selling a book.....we talked about everything BUT basketball...nice guy....yes, I go to Wellivers several times a year...10-12 miles away from here....I also get to Hamilton Oh. on a fairly regular basis...have a store on Rt4 near Fairfield....how close are you to this area ???

Richard lives VERY close, since he lives in Fairfield. I live just west of downtown, very close to the river so I am about 25 mintes from Fairfield, without traffic, 40 minutes or so during rush hour.
What type of store do you have? Are you near Jungle Jim's?

Ed......
My Hamilton store is just a mile or so north of Jungle Jims....it is in Hamilton Plaza....we own a chain of Discount Tobacco stores and a couple of car rental agencies....our tobacco stores are mostly in Indiana and a couple in Ohio.....I have made my living most of my adult life selling cigs and tobacco products....started a vending company when I was 15, was in the tobacco wholesale business from '74 till '88 and sold my business to another firm....then helped start the concept of discount cigarette stores in the midwest(we were the first ones).....have NEVER tried any kind of tobacco product myself, never even tasted a cig when I was a kid.....car rental agencies were started as a sideline, but have done well....they are only about 3 years old...the cig stores are pushing 10 years....I drive the orange Prowler there quite often, but I have never seen another Prowler in that area...used to see a black Viper RT/10 from time to time....

Heck yes. I don't know much about Canada. I do know it never warms up in Nova Scotia, even in July. It is beautiful, as is the area around Banff, but COLD. Fill us in, please.
