Absurd. Totally disagree. And if the article is true, then I guess over the past 20 years, we as a society have become kinder and more gentle as vehicles are dramatically smaller now. Even the Escalade would be smaller than the giant Suburbans of the 70's

Wayne, I had a couple of Suburbans back then and the SUV's of today are much taller, even if the the overall capacity is smaller. (and I don't know if that is true)
That was a woman who wrote the article, not a man, by the way.
Making those two points does not mean I am agreeing with her. She did a lot of quoting of important or famous people without mentioning the names. I don't know if her statistics are accurate, either. Like everything else you read, take it with a grain of salt. (Unless I wrote it, of course)

I'm always amazed at seemingly intelligent people lumping all people or in this case vehicles in one class.

All "whites" do this or all SUV owners do that.

Pretty absurd especially when you consider I got cut off in traffic the other day by an azz in a new mini-Cooper. Perhaps his problem was the color of his car. LOL!

I love the line that said, "The Dodge Durango, for instance, was built to resemble a savage jungle cat, with vertical bars across the grille to represent teeth and big jaw-like fenders"

Don't tell my wife though as she thinks it's her daily driver so she can be an azz and run over our kiddos (as the article states)

Screw Stephanie Mencimer I've been driving Jeeps for 15 years...before SUV's became what they are today, whatever that is. I'm on my fifth one. My Grand Cherokee isn't the most plush SUV out there, but it suits me just fine. My original purchase reason was to own a 4 wheel drive vehicle that was comfortable enough for every day use without being afraid to drive or park it anywhere. It goes anywhere in any weather without getting stuck with no hassles. I know my car is near the bottom of the SUV food chain, but her article still applies to me. Maybe she's a California girl that never saw the need for 4WD. JMO

Don't they say the same thing about BMW drivers ... Mercedes drivers (no offense Mr. and Mrs. P) ... Porsche drivers ...

Quote
"many Americans who are attracted to SUVs not because of their perceived safety, but for their obvious aggressiveness"

Huh. Obviously Steph hasn't driven an SUV. I can drive more agressivly in a Honda Accord than my wife's beast! Speed and handling just aren't what those vehicles are all about. Except maybe the X5. Back to my first point ...

After reading Butchcee's post I will amend mine, a lot of the new SUV's are a lot taller than the old Suburbans. The Cherokees and that type are not anywhere near as big but some of the new ones are approaching "semi" size. The biggest Ford is really tall. If you need a step ladder to get in, you might be overdoing it. I consider the Cherokee and that size to be more like a regular van than a behemoth.

I bet if the "government researchers" looked, they'd find that the GEO Prism has about the same kill rate when compared to bicycles as the "behemoths" do to small cars. Apples and Oranges. JMO

Stephanies first sentence tells us a lot about her! I suspect she is one of the A**Holes she describes in the article or just a liberal B****.

I love how liberals just can't figure things out. Of course the deaths in a SUV may be greater because they hold an average of 3 or 4 more passengers at a time. The odds go up the more are in the pot so to speak. I am usually the only one in my Accent (Prowler in the summer months) and my daughter usually has herself and her 5 children almost all of the time!

Usually when something weights 2 or 3 times as more it will do more damage when it hits something. Jesse Ventura will always win if I hit him, but I avoid the big guys. I don't beg him for a fight. Do you notice how many people in cars pull out in front of bigger objects?

Her discussion about seatbelt usage and the number of people killed not wearing seatbelts was mixing apples and oranges.

Liberals are making a mess out of this country!

Sorry but that liberal junk really gets me fired up. I need some warm weather so I can go cruising in the Prowler and make everything better!

Well, based on the drivers here in Detroit, here's how I feel:

I've been driving Jeeps since the early 80's. Nothing wrong with SUV's if the owner knows how to drive it properly. There are a lot of SUV owners that I have observed that don't!

I do intensely dislike the really large SUV's that are too wide and crowd parking spots, that I can't see around or through.

I do intensely dislike the suv owners who think because they have a larger vehicle than you that they can drive faster and drive over you and get really pi$$ed off when they think you are in their way.

Saw that ad on TV last night. I didn't realize that SUVs ran on terrorist made gasoline and all other internal combustion engines ran on anti-terrorist fuel. Man I need to pay closer attention at the pump. Don't want that terrorist stuff in my Kat!

Prowler, you are exactly correct.
Of course SUVs kill more when others are driving tin cans just as the kill rate would be higher on the Geo's if many others on the road were riding bikes. Kind of bizarre. Doesn't this really argue FOR SUVs because if you are in an accident, you will be more likely to survive than if you were in a Geo. So we should ALL drive SUVs.....oh, what the heck, we should all drive tanks. If everyone walked, we'd have nothing to worry about. Should we all have to default to the smallest car on the road?

My experience is that the young teenagers with their souped up Hondas drag racing are a lot more dangerous on the road that the mother of four carting the kids around. Sure there are crazy drivers in every vehicle segment but surely just because you drive an SUV doesn't make you a headcase.

Who said SUV's are big these days?????

I agree with most of what was said. The extreme things, no.
Example, the Durango was designed to look like the Ram truck, not an animal. That part was so stupid it was funny.

I read the article, and it was a bit on the harsh side. But I beleive the article would apply to a portion of SUV owners!

No offense to SUV owners here, but I have a list of why I don't like SUV's.

Most drivers feel invincible in a car/truck larger than all surrounding traffic. they bully themselves into lanes.

Most accidents that happen in the DC area are SUV's due to overconfidence in the drivers, and they are the most reckless in bad weather conditions..(not an opinion, this was as reported on the news)

They are road hazards and impossible to see around and ahead of.

They are Gas hogs.

Is the Excursion not big enough?!?! I mean, the truck is cool if you have horses to haul or are grocery shopping for 50 people, but I see too many of these monster size SUV's with just one person in there just going to work.

They are too big for most parking spots.

You know it's a disturbing trend when Mercedes and Porsche gets into the SUV craze!

OK reasons to have an SUV that I can comprehend......

You carpool.

You haul a lot of stuff around.

You go offroad a lot or go camping a lot.

You have a boat and trailer...

Have to take the kids to school, but would not be caught dead in a mini-van.

So there are reasons to own an SUV, I am just disturbed by the trend that some people DO buy them for road dominance. yes, it is no coincidence that the Durango was meant to look menacing and intimidating in your rear view mirror!

You asked for opinions, and there are mine. For those of you here who drive SUV's, I am sure you need them for the utility purpose they are designed for, and that article does not apply to any of you here....(Is my butt covered yet??)

It is amazing that people that want to draw attention to themselves can say or write such crap and in the same breath blame everyone else and turn statistics around to suit their own objective whether it is apples to apples or apples to sour grapes. I think that type of person just like to hear themselves talk because they are so insecure in themselves!! My thought, thanks for listening..
