This month's Hot Rod has been slamming people who drive Pro Tour vehicles and I don't quite get the distinction. Is Pro Tour supposed to be all show and no go as opposed to Pro Street? I don't get it. I thought Hot Rod was all about car enthusiasts, but they are getting an elitist mentality on this...... Would Hot Rod look down their noses at the Prowler then? Can anyone explain this further....I am lost on this subject. |

Good Point Boy, this is a little tough, I believe a hot rod is a car or truck highly customized or altered,,,,,,,,

Exactly Gary! Your definition of a hot rod matches mine. Hot Rod magazine has taken a wierd snobby stance lately, which I don't get. |

I agree. Have you noticed that Hot Rod, Car Craft and Rod & Custom have all changed (and not for the better) since Peterson Publishing sold out? |

I have a good friend that's a member if the IHRA. One thing they seem to require is a V-8! He always tells me my car is 3/4 of a hot rod... those Fast and Furious cars are 1/2 a hot rod, etc. My friend is a polite hot rodder, but you can hear plenty of the not so polite at Woodward when the Prowlers roll by... I considered getting a 'Street Rod' plate for my car. It qualifies in KY as 'built to resemble an antique hot rod', but I decided I didn't want the flake from the quote-unquote 'true' hot rod community. I say to each his own, enjoy your ride! Mike |

I will have to pick up an issue and take a look, but when they ran events in the past Pro Street are cars that look like race cars ( big tires, big motors ) that have license plates and are street legal. Pro Tour was cars that are built to the max with performance and could go across country with the air on. As far as a plate on your car mine say REALROD if you don't think I get a little heat for that but if someone push's the issue I'll pull out a couple of pics of my other cars and then ask them "What do you drive", Give them a laugh get in my car and cruise away. |

Pro Street VS Pro Touring My take on what I read of the story. The Pro Street is just that a drag car that is barely street legal. A Pro touring is a car built to run like the drag car but have the creature comforts that a touring car would. Good brakes, suspension, AC, stereo, power accessories that the owner could and does take on the Hot Rod Power tour and not be beat to death with a back halfed Pro Street car. Yes the mags have all changed, so have the cars. Look back 20 years ago and what was running on the streets. Today we cannot buy a `71 cuda convertible for $850 dollars (yes that is what I paid for mine) Cut the wheel wells and tub it, put 18" wide tires and wheelie bars and as big a motor as you could afford. Oh you have to cut a hole in the hood too so the motor can hang out. Many of these cars are worth $20,000~$50,000. WE have more money. we build what we want or what the factory should have built. I expect I will have $20,000+ in my `67 Dart convertible when I'm done, boy am I stupid, but what should have been a 10K car has went way out of hand. Pro Street NO, Pro Touring, not in my opinion, but a nice driver, H*ll yes. 400 HP small block with 4 speed, Disc Brakes, AC, stereo, looking at Power Windows too. How many `67 Darts have you seen with high HP, 4 speed, AC, PW, custom paint and a DROP TOP? They might think it is Pro Touring. Just a driver...LOL you don't see too many butchered cars in the mags today ------------------ This message has been edited by WildCat on 01-09-2003 at 03:04 PM |

What's most intersting on the Peterson mag conglomeration...They put out 4 "hot rod" mags and they got taken to task by a letter this month complaining that the same car (Strope's "Dust Ya" Duster) was featured in all 4 mags in the same month! talk about overlap! I just don't get the snob mentality of some groups of people. Technically the Prowler may not be a hot rod, but a factory emulation of a hot rod? On the other hand, If you have it NOS, and supercharged, then that is hot rodding to me. A stock Prowler is all about STYLIN'!......and just a bit of "go" when you need it. I still feel oh so smug when I pass a Vette, and watch the driver ogle my car in envy! ------------------ |

When I registered my car here in Arkansas it was classified on the registration papers as a " Prowler Hot Rod". SOOOOO I must have a Hot Rod, huh? |

Kelley...Must be if the state says so... In Southern MD, they still call it "The horseless carriage" |
