We took delivery of a new 2003 Chrysler Town and County Limited tonight. Very sweet.

Ordered the Nav Radio system, which is not quite available from the vendor yet. What's been your experience with these systems? Operating tips? Things to watch out for? Helpful hints?

Thanks for your input.

Never heard of a Nav radio. Is that something like satellite radio?

Kevin,

Don’t have the Chrysler version, but I do have one in my I35. It’s actually somewhat separate from the radio in that it’s got separate controls and the screen (like 5 inch motorized retracting) is pretty much dedicated to it. But when you pop the NAV disk out you can put a regular CD in it (equipped with CD changer in trunk). Then the screen becomes touch sensitive control for the additional CD player.

I know I used a small hand unit that was basically just a moving map on our trip to CO this summer. I thought it was pretty cool. But this does blow it away. It’s voice presentation and can create and adjust routes. I used it on a trip up to Chicago in Nov. We arrived late in the evening and really had no idea where we were going. Got directed to closed roads at least three times. Each time I simply turned and the voice told me where to go again. After all the detours we were really lost. But all the sudden it announced we had arrived at our destination. We looked up and sure enough it was there.

Now if you’re not going to go place that you haven’t before, in my opinion, it’s a little more than a toy. The car mine’s in is not the one we usually travel in. But for the Chicago trip, it proved useful. On mine, they cut the country up into like 8 regions focusing on major metropolitan centers. So if I wanted to use it on a long trip, I would need to purchase several disks at like $120 a pop. And of course they update these on a regular basis. Not that you have to upgrade, but not that you need to know where the new roads are either. Of course they could fit all these CD’s onto a DVD but less cost to them and more to me probably sounds like a good deal … to them.

Oh well, not sure how much of this will apply to your options, but I thought I would share what I knew.
