The hot topic in Cincy right now is the debate over whether Bud Selig is going to forgive Pete Rose and re-instate him. What does everyone think? I realize there are a lot of non-baseball fans but I wonder if the rest of the country feels the same way as Cincy, since he is a local.

The most hits in the history of baseball.

Yes - he belongs in the Hall of Fame. Period.

You don't have to like what he did off the field, but his play on the field merits induction.

Gary - in this case I don't think you can compare politics to baseball. JMO

Sorry Gary I don't see the analogy. There is a big difference between being the President of the United States and a Baseball player / sports figure. Besides what penalty exactly did Bill Clinton pay? He was censured and disbared in AK, Big feaking deal. He should have been impeached! Pete was kicked out of baseball for much lesser crimes than Clinton.

Pete is an idiot. Always was and always will be. He is also one of the greatest players to ever play the game, if not the greatest. His hit total is only one of the many records he holds in baseball, and will hold for a long time to come. Preventing him from being inducted into the Hall of Fame seriously diminishes the credibility of the institution. I suppose that Ty Cobb is still regarded as the all time hit leader by the Hall. What a sham. Hopefully they will wake up some day and make it right, not for what he did off the field but on it. He deserves it ...... and that's all I have to say on the subject.

I am not a baseball fan and couldn't care less, but he should be recognized for what he did within the sport. His personal life is just that and should not have any bearing. Let the baseball fans pass judgement on him if they choose for his gambling exploits, but don't ignore his other accomplishments.

I'm not a sports fan, BUT, I think they should reinstate.

I remember watching some little round ball and Old Petey diving in head first to get the base. He did alot for the sport. He might have had a problem with gambling, but that does not take away the records he made.

send the colts to LA, Oh, they don't want them either ...LOL

I grew up a Big Red machine fan in Southern Indiana. I remember listening to Reds games in the 70s on the Cincinnati Reds Radio Network. Rose, Perez, Consepsion(?), Morgan, Bench, Geronimo(?), Foster, Griffy. I don’t care what he did on his personal time. But if he broke the rules of baseball that disbar him the Hall (not necessarily up on the subject but wasn’t the charge he bet on a game he coached as opposed to some personal indigressions that landed him in jail) then no he doesn’t deserve to be there any more than the Black-socks that were prevent from entering. (Which of course allowed Cincy to win their first world series in 1919) But if there isn’t any proff, get out of the way and let the man in.

Pete's "Ballpark Cafe" recently closed here in Boca Raton where we live and I saw him this summer while eating breakfast in a local establishment. Looks the same minus a little hair.
While we are not ball fans either, I do agree he should be reinstated to the Hall of Fame.

Pete Rose was my favorite player when I was growing up playing t-ball and in little leagues. I think the league should allow him to be inducted into the hall of fame for his record-breaking game play, but not necessarily allow him back into professional baseball.

Pete is a couple of years older than me and went to Western Hills High School which is about 3 miles away from where I went to H.S. and of course they were the biggest rival, back then (but no longer). I did not like him at first since he was from West Hi and he was a hot dog but he thrilled a full house at Riverfront on MANY occasions. He did not have a very good arm, was not a fast runner but he got the job done thru perserverance and hustle. When he came back to Cincy after being in Philly and Montreal, he slid into third base on his first hit, and that really lit up the city again. When he had his hit streak going, they filled the park for days. He did a lot for the Reds and Cincinnati, but I agree that he really screwed up. There are locals who still strongly dislike him but I think if Selig uses him at the World Series and as an All Century Team player, he ought to be able to participate in the Reds events, like the last game at Riverfront (but he was not allowed). They want him to throw out the first pitch on 3/31/02 in the new park but so far that is a no no.
I was interested in the reaction to him from around the country, since it is a little biased here. I know he got the loudest ovation at the World Series but I am sure there are boo birds that will never like him. I understand both points of view.

I'm a BIG sports fan, but a father and I try and be a good role model.
I agree that Rose should be in the Hall, but I'm not so sure about him being back into baseball.

Ty Cobb might not be an appropriate anology, but here goes.
Being a sports freak, from a sports family and having the name Cobb, I did alot of research on him when I was in the eight grade. I had hoped to find a lineage to him of some sort so i could brag to my buddies. I became almost obcessed with finding out all I could about Ty Cobb. I quickly found out that Ty's family and Ty himself were not the best of people. I'm not talking minor stuff all family's have, but murderers, horse thieves, robbers, swindlers, spouse abusers. I was eventually glad to find out that we weren't kin and that the only reason his family spent some time in NC was because the men in his life were running from the law. Ty himself was hated by the other players, was arrogant and was involved in things in my mind far worst than Rose. Organized crime, prostitution, loan sharking, etc.
In Ty Cobb's day you didn't have the media attention you have today and things were taken care of outside the public eye.

Great topic. Pete Rose should never be allowed back in Pro Ball. Every club house has the rules posted and Pete knowingly broke those rules. He should accept the consequences of his own actions. He signed the restriction barring him from the game on his own free will. When our youngest was in grade school he interviewed the then Supervisor of American League umpires, Dick Butler, who was a local resident. The topic of Pete Rose came up and Dick wouldn't comment except to indicate that Pete was "a great ball player, but a sorry individual".

As for Ty Cobb there is no denying that he had a very dark side. But since his death it has become very fashionable to bash Ty. Ty Cobb was a true Dr Jeckle and Mr Hyde. When we visited Georgia a few years ago we went to Royston Georgia and saw another side of Mr Cobb. The local hospital and health care system is named in honor of Ty because of the huge endowment he left. Over 100 kids get college scholarships every year from the Cobb estate. Davey Williams (NY Giants 51-57?) talks of the wonderful encouragement that Ty gave him as a young man. The head of the MLB Hall of Fame gave a talk to a baseball group I belong to and when asked about Cobb commented on the two sides of Cobb that show up in his records that are in the Hall. One day it would be a check to pay for medical expenses for a former team mate the next whiskey and a wild comments against the some minority. He certainly had his evil side, but someone needs to mention that Ty left a legacy that is far, far greater than anything Pete Rose will.

On the late news they just said that DOWD said that he had proof Pete bet against the Reds when he was managing them. That is really bad news. I hope that is not true. I can see betting on your team to win, figuring you are trying to win but to bet against them is really damning.

They didn't call him "Charlie Hustle" for nothing. He gave baseball his all, and got the shaft in return. Selig has a personal vendetta against him, which just goes to show, there is crooked politics in everything.

I think the baseball players going on strike a few years ago and cancelling the World Series as a result was a far greater shame to baseball than ANYTHING Rose has ALLEGEDLY done!

Pete knew what he did was wrong, yet took the chance anyway.

The problem with society today is that nothing is black and white anymore. It's various shades of grey. Oral sex is really not sex. Sure he murdered his wife but, deep down, he's a nice guy.

Why not go back to your colege or high school and demand that any C, D, or F you made be changed to an A and you be posted as the Magna Cum Lauda now? I mean, it's been long enough ans surly you have learned your lesson for making that C, right?

Sorry, Pete did the crime. He is a total embarassment to baseball regardless of anything he did in the sport.
What kind of message does that send to the youth? Yeah, you can lie, steal cheat, murder, and hell, we'll let you in after a cooling off period.

If they do let him in, maybe they can make a commercial out of it with pete and strawberry. I can see it now. As pete is think over his acceptance speech, he can turn to a young strawberry and say, "Hey kid, go get me a coke....." And strawberry could respond, "You bet!!!!!!!!!!"
