Contemplating purchasing a new SUV. I currently have a 96 Passport 6 cylinder that seems to have no power on hills even when I am not pulling anything. I have a 2,500 lb. trailer that I like to use in summer to go on trips and just think I need something with more power. I would like a SUV that has a high safety rating and is not $50,000. Might not do it this year but there are a lot of incentives out there on new vehicles right now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We bought an '01 Durango for my wife last year, and it is the best SUV/family car we've ever had. Price is right, and plenty of power. Looked at everything else, and the only thing we liked better was the Toyota Sequoia, which was about $15K more.

don't forget to consider gas mileage, it can really add to operation costs.

We have a '98 Durango and we just turned 100K miles! We love our D!!!!!!

Get it in time for the Toys for Tots campaign and you can do what we do... take the Durango to haul all the toys from the dealership and then take the prowler to cruise

I purchased a 2002 Toyota Sequoia SR5 2-wheel drive to make a trip from FL to New England in July. Traded in the PT Crusier. It is a excellent vehicle. You should be able to get one loaded (Leather,Alloys, Lighted running boards, Hitch,3rd row seats, etc.) for less than $34k. I swapped out the original Bridgestone tires - 245/70-16 for the new Michelin Cross Terrain 265/70-16. They made a world of difference in ride, noise and wet weather performance. Mileage per the computer shows a solid 18+ on the highway with 15.7 around town on regular gas. Plenty of power
If you do not need 4-Wheel drive the 2WD has Stabil-trac

Are there any good GM products out there that are safe. My father use to work for GM and I get a good discount. Have always been happy with my previous SUV's and must have 4-wheel drive or I might be stuck at home for about a week about once a year. The only problem with this one is I just got too small of engine. It needs to be bigger than a 2L if that is indeed what I have. Haven't opened up the hood yet to look and see. I think that is the correct terminology, if not correct me.

remember the friends and family program on DC Products...use on Durango with either V8's

I would look at R/T with 360 but that is me...the 4.7 I hear is powerful enough for your needs

I have never purchased a GM product before so I know nothing about them. What is this friends and family of DC program? Where whould I look to find out more about it. I did find a site to give me knowledge on the safety issue. Will have to check out Durango's on it.

contact CJ when she gets home from CTC for info on friends and family.

It allows employees to help people get a good deal on a new vehicle without the hassle of price. I think it is about 1% under invoice, plus you get all the rebates.

Good Luck

Taz, did you try the cheap fix? Disconnect the positive battery cable for about 10 minutes. Turn on the Air Conditioner (I didn't dare use A/C in this case) and drive it hard after you hook up the cable again. It helps, for real.

We tested a new ENVOY and OLDS Bravada. These vehicles have oustanding features and seemed to be very solid. I believe the towing capacity was high also...maybe worth a look. The Olds was more carlike than the Envoy and also had the best warranty.

I've got a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with the 4.7L V-8. Plenty of power and a nice ride. Mine has the factory option 5 spoke chrome wheels that really sets it off!

OK, I looked today at the Durango and the Trailblazer. The trailblazer seems to have a power engine, but what do I know. It has at 270hp, 4200 vortec, straight 6, whatever that means. It is in the low $30,000's. The Durango seemed like a really good vehicle also, but was not as pleasing to my eye. But what's the deal they are all automatics, I am use to manual and really do not know what I would do with all that spare time I will have by not shifting. I like the manual on mountain roads. Or is there something that those who drive automatics know that I don't. Still looking at safety. I think the Durango have a V-8 which is good but as Todd said what about the gas mileage. This will be my everyday go everywhere vehicle and it is 30 miles to get a pair of socks and 200 miles round trip to go to home depot which is where I am alot. Any help appreciated. Thanks for all the help so far.

Dr. Prowler:

Will seriously consider your opinion because as I remember you were the only one that liked my song "Prowling Through the Park One Day". Thank you for your input.

I see a lot of talk about the Durango (is size and seating capacity a concern) and Trailblazer. I have been driving SUVs as my daily driver since 1987. I have driven a Jeep Grand Cherokee since 1993 and average about 35,000 mile per year. Currently I own a 1995 Grand Cherokee (my son drive it at college now) a 2001 Grand Cherokee Laredo ( My wife drives it daily) and my 2001 Grand Cherokee Limited 4.7 Liter V8 ( my daily driver). My wife tried driving a Ford Explorer but that last 6 months ( she hated the way it rode and drove). Before we bought her 2001 in august last year we test drove almost every SUV made. She could drive what ever she wanted (under 40,000) and she would not consider anything other than the Jeep. I have had 9 Grand Cherokees since 1993 and with over 35,000 mile per year they reliability has been excellent and have never had any major repairs, problems (key is to maintain a vehicle with regular oil changes and tire rotation and brakes). I have noticed the changes from model year to model year in the Grand Cherokee and with the 1999 year the size was increased and ride improved. I find the performance is superb. The handling is good and the vehicle is very capable and a solid performer. If performance is a concern the 4.7 V8 is good and gas mileage is good for a V8 and a four wheel drive. I have the quadtrac system which is a full time system and have been very very pleased with the whole vehicle. As my license plate states "its a Jeep thing and you would not understand"

I am ready to by another vehicle in 2003 and Jeep is at the top of the list. I wish DC would build the Compass I saw at the Auto show (if they would I would by immediately).

Good luck on you choice.
