While checking on a prescription for my wife I was wating on the phone to see if it was ready and over heard a discussion from two pharmacy techs." try this red one its great, (other) I like the blue ones or the speckle ones they are better, Here taste this one, green, its good.
After a few minutes of this she finally said, Yes sir your pres is ready. I replied whose did you just eat. There was plenty laughter over the phone then she replied we are eating jelly beans. I chuckled and said OK as long as the right jelly beans are in my wifes pres.
When we picked up the pres. they had a pack of jelly beans in the bag.

Al - even scarier than that is my 16 year old daughter got a job at Walgreen's for the summer. This a junior to be in high school with no experience. Guess what she does? Yep - prescription tech. She types in prescription into label maker & Walgreens computer. She counts and fills the bottles.

At least the licensed pharmacist has to check to be sure it is the correct meds!

It has probably been that way but I never had to think about before.

Marty,

If she's a licensed pharmacy tech, then it's legal for her to remove, count, and return Rx's from stock. Yes, even Controlled and Dangerous drugs. Pharmacist will do final inspections be for Rx's go to the patients.

I ran into a retired pharmacist that I knew a few weeks ago and we were talking about how much that profession has changed. He told me a pharmacist just out of college makes $95,000 a year. I wonder why prescription drugs are expensive. Of course they advertise them in full page ads so you go in and ask your Dr. for them by name. I would imagine that costs a bundle, too. I am now off my soapbox.

If anybody needs any pain killers, Lindsay's phone number is 502...... She wants her own KAT.

She would be grounded (and worse) forever if this ever happened.

fixumm - I'll have Lindsay scan some and email them to you. You can just stick some dollar bills in the fax machine and send her payment!

(at work, that actually happened in the mid '80s. A customer faxed copies of four twentys for a $65.00 order and requested change)

Ed, in most states these days you must have a Pharm D degree to become a licensed pharmacist. Six long years of college. There is also a big shortage of young people wiling to go into this profession. I was the NCOIC of a pharmacy at Walter Reed Medical Center and belive me the job is one that is very stressful & tedious. New drugs are forever coming out on the market and it is the pharmacist's responsibility to know what they do, don't do - what you should take with them or shouldn't take with them, what to expect as side effects, etc. It is also the RPh's responsibilty to make sure that the tech has dispensed the correct medication, dosage, etc & typed the correct info on the labels & attached the appropriate warning stickers. They also have to contend with the chicken scratch writing of most physicians on prescriptions. If a mistake is made, it lies on the $95,000 a year pharmacists shoulders. His or her actions could mean life or death. It's serious - it's not just counting pills & injecting drugs into IV bags. Sorry about my ranting & raving - Kendra

you want to talk about stress how about when a customer with a car that gets a little tiny dent in it, is mad that the air bag diden't go off and wants to sue the car maker.and wants me to find out why it dident go off.Or three years later and another 35000 miles on their car, their front end is out of alignment and they say i did a bad job.(this happens more than people think) when i retire i will get a job at a fast food joint and blow bugers on the meat just to get back at people.

fixumm - some day you need to tell us about your childhood. It must have been a traumatic time for you based on the way your mind works now! Either that, or your mother choked you at birth and deprived your brain cells of oxygen for about a two & 1/2 minutes.

Marty..........it had to be more than 2 1/2 minutes as it doesn't appear that his mind works at all..........

PB, I have several relatives who are pharmacists and I worked in a drug store during and right after high school. I realize these people need to be pretty sharp and work crummy hours.

onaprwl, you should be VERY proud. The schooling is very hard, I'm sure much harder than when I went(I won't go there) But best of all you'll never have to worry about supporting her, there will always be a job waiting for her.
