I did this and it works: FYI... Subject: IMPORTANT: Personal Information goes public Starting July 1st, 2002, the four major credit bureaus in the US (Equifax, etc) will be allowed to release credit info, mailing addresses, phone numbers, etc., to ANYONE who requests it. If you do not want to be included in this release of your personal information, you can call 1-888-567-8688. Once the message starts you will want option #2 (even though option #1 refers to this email, push #2) and then option #3. Be sure to listen closely, the first option is only for a two-year period. Make sure you wait until they prompt for the third option, which opts you out FOREVER. You should receive their paperwork in the mail confirming the "opting out" in less than one week after making the call. PASS THIS MESSAGE ON TO ALL IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK, |

Al - thanks, I'll opt out, but while on the phone, I'll keep Ed 'in' until he gets his computer back up Don't you think Ed would go out and buy another computer, for as long as it has taken to fix his? |

My wife just saw on CNN that this may be a plot by some convicts, to get our information. BETTER CHECK IT OUT!!! If Butchcee's information is correct, I certainly want to be excluded. If anyone can pin this down, PLEASE POST!!! |

I went to the Equifax website and they listed the same number as an 800 for opting out. I called that 800 number and it said it was changed to the 888 number that Butchee listed. Unless Equifax is part of the convicts.... (I wouldn't put it past them). |

Thanks! I made a copy of your post and passed it out to everyone in my department. I called the 1-888 number and added my name to the blocked list. Pretty easy to do, I hope it works! |

I was going to add this and I forgot. I don't know how many have you have called back and listened to option #1 (regarding the Internet email). It states that the law starting July 1st is for financial institutions and has nothing to do with this phone number. It then goes on to ask if you want to be opted out of mailings, credit offers, etc. then to proceed. I am wondering if that is all that is going on here, taking our names off of a mailing list (that should reduce my mail by 75% if I can get rid of the credit offers). Any thoughts? |

Brad - here is another link from urbanlegends.com (a redirect but that is where it is linking from) that explains it better than I did. http://www.tafkac.org/ulz/glb.html |
