The e-mails look harmless, the but payload is deadly.
They all have the virus embedded in them, no doubt.

I am getting emails from POA members telling me that the flag hitch looks good. I think that is part of the virus as I have no idea what the flag hitch is all about. Check your computers. I don't live in Jacksonville, Lance. I hope you were talking about Lee Ferguson.
If I win the T-shirt, can I have it in Mulholland Blue, Mike? lol

Mohawk Monahan - YOU always come up with a cheap way to win a tee-shirt. Is Sandy entered in wet t-shirt contests? I just can't believe this, as I work my butt off to honestly try to win a shirt, and you dip to new lows each time to beat me. You are out of my will, forever!

Gee, I only got it 6 times. Here's some info on the Virus.

July 19 — Anti-virus companies have raised their risk rating on a new computer virus making the rounds called “Sircam.” The virus is particularly troublesome because it arrives with random subject lines and attachment names, meaning there’s no easy way to warn computer users. The bug also has a nasty payload — it can expose private corporate information. The number of infections around the world has risen sharply during the day Thursday, leading anti-virus firms to raise the warning flag.

I am truly sorry for all of the trouble this has caused. In answer to Mike's question...I did not drink all that booze myself. It was a 10 day vacation in the Abacos with friends!

The info below is not presented as an excuse ( clearly I had my guard down) but as a reminder of how careful we should be.

The email which infected my computer came from the computer of a friend here in Jax. My MacAfee software did not catch it, it was not an exe. file and it was from a known friend so I opened it. This was several days ago. I had no idea there was a problem till I got home yesterday and saw over 100 emails in my inbox. Many of them were undeliverable mail notices. It did not send emails to people in my address book but to names in the temp file cache in MSIE. Most of the emails went to people who would not recognize my name.

I had not updated the MacAfee files in the past 60 days. I assume it would have caught if I had. Once I downloaded the most recent files it quickly identified the corrupted files.

It infected one of my registry files and the software would not clean it so I had to delete it. Now I will have to restore my hard drive to its original condition and reinstall all of the programs I have added. I have backups of most of the data, but it still will be a chore.

The moral of the story keep your antivirus software up to date, turned on and stay ever vigilant.

Oh sure, I am a total computer illiterate but I post the first warning and I get grief from AZ Alley Cat. I have to admit that I have been a HACKER for years, but only on a golf course.
If I win a T-shirt, I will contribute it to a homeless Hooter girl (or maybe I should offer her shelter, instead)

David,

Either update your virus definitions on your current virus software, or if you are not running virus software get it now and scan your entire hard drive. The site that Cliff suggested http://cws.internet.com/virus.html has a free program called Innoculte.

I think this would be a good time for everyone to scan their system to prevent any further spreading of this virus.

Also don't open any attachments in any email that has the following information in the body of the email:

*************************************************
Hi! How are you?

I send you this file in order to have your advice

See you later. Thanks

DBSJazz, it isn't coming from me. I am still receiving new emails with the virus almost every hour. I didn't start it but I may have helped pass it on but I rebooted my computer last night, taking it back down to ground zero, I think. I don't think at this point it could still be coming from me.
I figure if this thread gets over a 100 reponses I will get a new Prowler. What is the all time record for responses.

Ed, I just recieved two mail messages with attachments from you.. The subject line was "Flaghitch", asking me to take a look at it and give you advice....

At the office I handle the Virus scanning for the network and there is a new virus which acts like this one. DO NOT OPEN THE FILES!! What it does is gets all the .JPG, .GIF files on your pc and sends them out to everyone in your address book... UNless you want everyone to see what you have, I repeat do not open the attachments... The tip off for this virsu is that it always is asking for advice from you... Hope this helps someone..

I got 4 messages from Leigh while out on a biz trip. Thank God I did not advise my wife to open them as she was reading me my emails over the telephone. They stopped coming in after Friday and it's Friday at 6pm when my computer automatically scans for viruses for the week.

Just for all to know, the virus is still floating around. Got another one today from "ddouyotas". I didnt open it this time and had no desire to test Norton.

I am still getting these messages at a fairly consistent rate. Anyone else still receiving them? InoculateT is no longer available to new subscribers but the other one that SasyMomma posted took care of it, I hope.
I didn't see Al's post when I posted this one. I just got two from Al Hilfinger, titled Ed's tolerance.
