On-Star: a want-to-be navigation system, that sends you a bill each month, with no inflight movies?

OnStar - a marketing ploy playing to the fears of people who don't realize you can do the same things with a cell phone and an extra key planted under a bumper!

I would agree accept with a head on or side collision that sets off the airbags and perhaps the driver is knocked out.

It's kinda like the life raft on a boat, useless till you really need it.

I'd also never leave a key anywhere on the outside of a car. I think most crooks would look there first!

Here is my description:

A system added to a vehicle that allows me (a female) to feel safe driving cross country alone or with my minor child.

I had to ability to talk (via the integrated phone) hands free to my husband even in vast expanses of road where no cell service was available.

I truly like ours...I also like the XM, first thought it was a lot of hype...then we got a free subscription with our new car. I am sold and will buy systems for the other vehicles as well.

My two cents,
Dawn

I think it is probably like anything else, for some people it is great, for others it is a total waste.

Larry,
Is Lethia wanting her next GM car with On-Star? Or am I misreading your query intent? I have NO experience with OnStar or Global Positioning Systems or XM Radio! I feel I have NO NEED of any of it, but, have friends/family who swear by one, two, or all three of these! The $20 bucks a month is my biggest gripe--yet, I gladly pay big bucks monthly for 222 TV channels...many of them premium digital channels. So, all boils down to which toys we want, eh! I love my DVD Recorder...for recording premium digital movies but realize they aren't for everyone. Also, there's TIVO now plus Pay-per-View plus On Demand plus...well, you get the picture! I think OnStar is probably good for elderly drivers who live (drive) alone...just not for me yet--but could be in the future! Who knows what they will do next year? I don't seem to know what I'll do next month!

Ken - how was the birthday gift from Elf?

No, has nothing to do with Lethia wanting a GM car. A Viper owner friend of ours did some research on OnStar. It was amazing what he found out. When you see or listen to their tv and radio ads,,,,,OnStar points out what they can do for you. Maybe not,,,,,could it be what it can do for them? That is the only clue I'm giving out now, except the question asked above contained the word "purpose" of OnStar. I'll explain what I heard tomorrow. Stay tuned,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Let me guess, GM is taking the "black box" to a new level. It probably covers their a$$ in case of an accident with airbag deployment.

Does it also tell them if you serviced the car? Are they using it to deny warranty claims?

It would be easier if you just told us what you found out. We have a Chevrolet Suburban with OnStar, but we didn't renew the basic service when the free year expired. If it's really bad, I'll yank out the whole system, as I'm pretty sure it still transmits something, even though we don't pay for the service.

Yes, to #2.

Let some others take a shot at it,,,the story can wait until tomorrow. Nothing most of "us" would have to be concerned about,,,,,other people would have to worry about it[another clue].

Always there, Always on, OnStar.

Yes, it does all of the things it says it can do:

Open door locks - when you lose your keys.

Start the car ignition - when you lose your keys.

GPS location finder - when you are lost or in a accident.

Plus many, many more functions!!!

Here is what a friend of ours found out about OnStar:

General Motors OWNS OnStar,,,backed by the financial arm of GM,,,GMAC.

GM sells millions of cars, fact. GMAC finances a huge amount of those GM cars sold every year,,,plus the used car market as well.

Purpose of OnStar from their technology standpoint,,,,while convincing you that it is "on the job" for 'your' needs,,,,,,,,provides them the information needed to locate your car [and their's] while under a financial lien.

Miss your car payments: OnStar will locate the vehicle, disable the ignition, lock the doors, report to repo contractor the vehicle's position, open the doors for them when they reach the location, and start the car for them to either take possession of and drive away or load onto a tow truck for return. No keys needed. Guess they will not tell you that information. On the other hand, if you finance a GM car,,,,,,MAKE THE MONTHLY PAYMENT!!

I wonder if they would stop a vehicle for the police department in a criminal / crime situation?
