... sooner or later... I was on my way to pick up a trailer bra from radcat Rich today. As I sat as the first car at the light, middle lane, I hear sirens getting closer. I looked to the left, but couldn't see much around the Blazer next to me. I looked right, but didn't see anything there either. Looking in my side mirror, I see a firetruck trying to worm his way thru the cars behind me. I looked up at the light... its still red. The Blazer to my left starts easing his way over into my lane, but he couldn't go anywhere with me there. I eased forward myself, trying to see around him for cross traffic, but with him continueing to be in my way, I couldn't see around him. I didn't see anyone going thru the intersection, and the firetruck's siren starting to blip, and blow his horn to CLEAR THE WAY! I figured certainly everyone hears him, so I took the initiative to give them a lane out, and hit the gas. As soon as I could see around the Blazer on my left, I'm staring at a van heading right for me. $H!T!!!! I floor it. Just as I start my sigh of relief at making it past without getting hit, I am suddenly thrown into a spin. Another 1" and she'd have missed me. $%#*&^%! She has no insurance, doesn't speak English, and procedes to call her husband. Fortunately he speaks English and wanted to talk to me. I told him what happened and he said he would fix my car. I wasn't gonna argue. Ok, cool! Then I put his wife back on the phone. About a minute later a wrecker stopped and offered help. I said I thought we were both mobile, but that she told me she couldn't drive, but then again, she couldn't understand English. The wrecker driver told me I had a flat (right front). I motioned for the lady to pull into a nearby driveway to work it out. I parked it in the street. The wrecker driver held traffic while we moved, then another firetruck pulled up behind me in the street to help keep me from getting hit. (The first firetruck called for him.) An ambulence passed by, then another anbulance passed, then a cop drove slowly past and went on his way. *WHEW!* (My inspection sticker was expired too.) (oh, BTW, I was in my van. Thank God the Prowler was out of gas today!!) The wrecker waited to see if I had trouble getting lug nuts loose, (I didn't) and the firemen reminded me to set my parking brake and set it for me while another got my spare. After I changed my tire, while I was tightening the nuts, one fireman lowered my van while another put my tire in the back. The lady's husband wanted to talk to me again. He said since it wasn't her fault, that we need to call the cops and that he was coming out to the scene. I told him that wasn't needed. Both vehicles were driveable, that his wife would get a ticket for no insurance, and that the police had already just driven past without stopping. He said that he would fix his car, and I can fix mine. I thanked the firemen for their help and hi-tailed it out of there before he changed his mind. Estimate for repairs is $1100 - $1600. I think I can get away with $25 for the busted lens. I gotta say, it could have been alot worse, but with everyone being so nice and helpful, it all turned out pretty good, and nobody was hurt. I'm DAMN glad I thought twice about taking the Prowler today!

Hey glad you're ok! I guess the way to look at this is that if you had been driving your Prowler, you would have been about two or three miles past that intersection already because you would have been driving a little (no, a lot) faster!

halicat - funny you should bring up the language on signs. Just this past week, Ed's pen pal from New Mexico [name withheld] presented a bill to U.S. Congress calling for ALL traffic signs in California, Arizona, Neveda, N.Mexico, and Texas be changed to the Spanish language FYI - the Az Department of Motor Vehicles provides testing for the driver's license test in 9 different languages. WTH, if they can't read English,,,,why are we giving them a driver's license???

AC - i'll typically put in as much gas as I will need for a given trip and burn it all off. Been doing pretty good at it too. The one time in question, there SHOULD have been a planned gas stop (by the coordinator) and their wasn't one.
