.... let's talk about something REALLY controversial.

Is U2 "selling out" with Bono's screaming lyrics for Ipods all over TV land and two songs from their upcoming album to be featured on a new CSI episode soon?

Or are these actions along with two scheduled VH1 shows featuring U2 just good old fashion marketing?

How is it selling out? A record label band is in business to crank out tunes and make boatloads of cash. Using their songs for commercials, muzak in elevators, movies, Tv, etc. are just other avenues to bring home the bacon.

Its not like it used to be. With all the pirated music today, most bands make little or no money from CD sales (unless of course you are lucky and sell millions and millions of CD's). They make their money from concert tours, paraphernalia sales, and selling their songs for whatever else.

I'll still hold out that someone out there will take the other side.

Actually I never had a thought about it until three people in our office got in a discussion about in the breakroom this afternoon. I guess so many entertainers do it, it never occurred to me that some "traditionalists" still think it's all about the music.

It is still about the music, just different venues.

Is the guy playing at an arena a sellout compared to the guy who can't fill a small club?

Is it not a sellout to make money off a CD but, is off a commercial?

Bottomline is and always has been, it's about the money.

I may be the guy you're lookin' for Marty.

Yes. The answer is yes. They sold out. Period.

Once upon a time, long ago in a galaxy far, far, away, the music industry was vehemently anti-establishment. It's still cool to be "edgy". You can't be "edgy" and have your songs playing on a Target commercial at the same time. Jimi Hendrix would never have let them use Purple Haze to sell laundry detergent.

It may now be that it's "all about the money", but to us old time diehard music fans, it's still selling out. True hardcore old time rock and roll and corporate america were like oil and water.

At least they used to wait until bands were defunct or died in a plane crash or from alcohol poisoning or by choking on their own vomit before they prostituted the songs

I always thought the edgy ones were the ones that were on tiny little fm stations that only played stuff that you never heard from bands that you never heard. Frank Zappa comes to mind.

I don't remember if any or alot of bands sold their music for commercials way back when but, a number of them did for movies.

Keep in mind too, alot has changed since then and we are talking multi-million dollar deals for a 30 second commercial. How many live acts would one have to do to reach that?

Selling out is Bob Seger letting Chevy use Like a Rock. Of course, there is also Gary Coleman doing commercials now for a pawn shop. Now that is selling out!
