the Charger 500 was "Mother MOPARS" first real venture into the Nascar "Aero Wars" during the late sixties.....the Charger 500 was a special built car with a custom fastback and a flush grill from a Dodge Coronet....the cars didn't produce the results hoped for, thus the Charger Daytona was born....it was the Charger 500 with a wing and nose, plusa few other small refinements......the Daytona and Plymouth Superbirds were too good.....Nascar eventually made them obsolete by reducing engine size for the Aero cars to the point they were not competitive......end of an interesting era in automotive history....the bronze Charger 500 is on Ebay....don't see them for sale too often(especially a HEMI)....approx 393 manufactured and approximately 503 of the Daytonas.....Plymouth followed in 1970 with approximately 1985 more units.....I drove the Charger 500 factory prototype car about 20 years ago....it belonged to a friend of mine and he kept it stored at my warehouse....it was a red 426 HEMI with a vinyl top....only one I ever saw with a top like that.....it was used by Chrysler for many of the publicity shots/posters in the early days.....car is on the east coast now, and my buddy is in Thailand......

Ford had the Torino Talladega, Mercury Cyclone Spoiler

By 1970 the Charger 500 was reduced to nothing more than a trim package and lost its special aerodynamic features. This is Dave Jr's 1970 Charger 500. This particular car has a 383 under the hood.

Three sister I work with own a 69 Charger that theirfather left them. It's sitting in a barn waiting until I talk them into selling it to me. Only visual damage six years
ago was a dented fender. I sure hope they decide to sell it in the next few years.

My second car (when I was 16) was a red 66 Charger with Chrome Craiger SS Mags. What a Drive-in car! I let a girl drive it and she pulled out in front a car and totaled it in the first block, right before my eyes. I still have a picture of it somewhere. MEMORIES!

Marty: Having just gone through this I can tell you that front fenders in good condition are very hard to find if you want original steel.

Here's a picture of my '66 Charger 383 automatic with working a/c. Third owner, absolutely no rust, good glass, original paint and interior, excellent chrome and mechanically new.
It's for sale for $8000.00 if anybody is interested. I hate to sell it but I need more space.

Oh Yeah! I remember them VERY well. In fact - my wife and I just returned from an Aero Warriors reunion at Talladega last weekend. One of the clubs I belong to (Daytona-Superbird Auto Club) organizes it. They only hold the reunion every five years.

LOTS of great Superbirds, Daytona's, Charger 500's, Ford Torino Talladega, Mercury Cyclone and Cyclone II's, even some of the actual race cars(very cool)from Dodge, Plymouth, Ford and Mercury - well over 100 cars from all over the country and Canada.

They even had speakers and autograph sessions with winged car drivers including Buddy Baker, Charlie Glotzbach, Bobby Allison and Chrysler winged car design engineers Larry Rathgeb and George Wallace as well as Ford's lead engineer, Charlie Gray, and Hollman & Moody crew member John Bach.

Great time included driving in a parade lap on the track before the Nextel race.

Interestingly, when asked, every one of the guys from that era agreed that today's "racing" is not real stock car racing - used to be there was a lot of competition to see what team's could do to get the most out of their machine. Now with NASCAR's rules trying to keep the cars equal, it's more like they're riding around to see whose sponsor can get the most TV time.

I have completely lost interest in NASCAR. I cancelled all my tickets after attending races for over 20 years. We went to at least 5 races a year. I am very disillusioned with what NASCAR has become. I don't even watch them on TV anymore....what a waste they are now.

i still watch them and like most races...but hate it when the same 6 or 8 drivers win almost all the races.. especially when team members block for eachother...the ones with the most money to invest, win most of the races....wheres the competition in that ??
