I have business in Las Vegas Oct 11 thru 14. Wife and middle son are flying out with me next Friday as we plan to visit the Grand Canyon on Oct 9 & 10. I know the prowlers were there a few years ago. Does anyone have suggestions on what to see and do. Would appreciate any suggestions.
Wife mentioned a train into the park -- is this a good way to go? Thanks

If you can swing a helicopter ride around the canyon, go for it. I did that back in 1981.

PCP - Welcome to the Grand Canyon State

Butch may be right about the helicopter flight, but it is a very high dollar trip,,,and last I heard, all flights whether plane or helicopter are now kept at a very high altitude 'above' the canyon rim due to several accidents in the past few years. You might check into that.

I'd suggest, if you are driving from Vegas:

Stop at Lake Mead and tour the Hoover Dam.

Catch I-40 east to Flagstaff, but stop in the town of Williams to see the Route 66 store there. Lots of things inside the store to view about the history of the old route 66 highway. Guy named Peter owns the store, and has a Prowler.

From Flagstaff, take US highway 180 to the Grand Canyon. You'll reach Grand Canyon City once inside the park (small town where all the park service workers live). Now take Az-64 along the South Rim and stop at most of the viewing areas to take a look down into the canyon. Each stop has a different breath taking view. When you reach the tower at the east end of the canyon,,,,continue east on Az-64 over to US - 89 south,,,back to Flagstaff. I'd bypass the train ride from Williams to Grand Canyon City,,,not worth much in sights or entertainment.

From Flagstaff, take I-17 south a few miles until you catch up with US-89A to Sedona. Your family will enjoy this trip!!! Stop in Sedona to look around at the stores and the red rock country that it sits in. Next, continue on 89A to Cottonwood/Clarksdale. In Clarksdale you will find a three-hour train ride that is worth the money and everyone will enjoy = Verde Valley Railroad. After the train ride, you will want to continue on 89-A just a few more miles to the old 'ghost' mining town of Jerome, Az. Spend a couple of hours there visiting the museum and stores in Jerome. From here, you can return trip it back to Sedona/Flagstaff or continue on to the old capital town of Prescott, which is an old cowboy town with lots of history.

....the Grand Canyon was one of the most awe inspiring sights I have ever seen ......was in Vegas again last week, roughly 300 miles from Vegas to G. Canyon.....the Hoover Dam is also very worthwhile.....there are bus tours leaving the Strip every day to the canyon if you don't want to drive....not sure of the cost....they leave at 6am...
...we also drove thru the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forrest a few years ago while cruising Arizona Route 66.....probably too far out of your way, but they are also very unique.....
...I have visited Arizona several times in the last few years and never cease to be amazed at the different things to see there....probably enjoyed Frank Lloyds Taliessen West(sp)in Phoenix more than anything.....we are supposed to stay in Tuscon for some meetings next year, anxious to see that too....
